Hello everyone it's your favourite rogue here again. I am looking for a laptop this time. I have a good PC I feel and am looking for a semi good laptop to play some basic games on nothing like arma or ark but nice easier to play games like star dew valley.  So really just a laptop which can play games to a okay level at a reasonable price range, looking at maybe 600 but am felexible to this price if it worth it. I know that you lot are great at all this as I have seen you help a lot of other members out so am hoping you can help me find a good laptop to take round my gf to play simple games on.

Thanks
Rogue :D

Take a look at the Asus range, you'll find something near that price point with good power and a 1080p screen.

Seems like quite a decent price for it and the new GL series (about 6 lbs) is a big improvement on the G behemoth (which was closer to 10 lbs).  The metal case version seems to get some favourable feedback too, but not sure how that fits into the budget.  The ability to upgrade is also a huge benefit.

The N series are described as 'multimedia' not gaming, but several of us have used them (or still use in my case) for lan gaming, so might also be worth a look if you can find similar savings on them to the one you found.  Because they tend to be 1080p resolution the gfx and CPU are not overly taxed.

Certainly the one you found would tend to do everything you described that you wanted.   I've not looked at how the one you linked compares to the N series, just recommending you take a look as I and several members have had good experience with N's (Sulky, Penfold and me to name a few), but an N will not be as fast as the GL, but might be a little cheaper for a comparable spec (assuming a similar level of discount is available on them).

This is all based on my experience of Asus laptops, others might have struggled with them, but for me they have been a good solid buy over the years and I like the look of the GL a lot more than the old gaming series.

Hope this helps.

This should be a solid choice. You will see a lot of Asus gaming laptops at the LAN, and with good reason. The only thing I would advise is getting a cooling stand, to make it last longer. High performance laptops do have the drawback of a shorter lifespan due to heat. You don't need one, but it will extend its life a bit.

I still use my Asus G75VW as my primary machine, though I already replaced the GFX card once under warranty due to heat damage. I did not use a cooling stand

Ah okay thanks very much for all that o brought it yesterday as with prime it would come today on my day off and I can give it ago, brought a little simple mouse as well didn't want anything to fancy but will definitely look at a cooling stand is there any you recommend ? And again :)

I've had a Coolermaster one and it's served well.  Plenty of choice out there though:

Depends a lot on what you want (flashy lights in the fans, height adjustment etc).   I did not need height adjustment, so the fixed Coolermaster aluminium stand worked well for me.   Plastic ones I am less keen on as they will break and they don't shift heat as well imo.

Mine I think is this one:

TeaLeaf

I have it under the laptop any time the laptop is on.

It comes down to, as TL says, what you want it to do. There are simple ones that just raise the laptop up a bit and have a fan underneath, and there are taller ones that raise the laptop up at an angle so you can use a normal mouse and kb right in front of it while having good distance and angle to the screen. It comes down to personal preference. Just make sure the one you pick supports the weight and size of the laptop you have.

Hijacking this thread a bit but did you end up getting a laptop in the end Rogue and what one if it was the case?

Wondering a bit because I'm in the market for a new laptop at the moment (both for gaming and school work) and I'm looking at the the Asus GL552VW (roughly with these specs) or at perhaps the Asus ROG Strix GL 502 ((Roughly these specs) but that one mainly cause it got a 970m that apparently is a lot better then the 960m and perhaps a bit more future proof since I can't really get a new laptop that often (my current one is 5,5 years old) but someone else here with more experience and knowledge got any more ideas that I've missed, any help is appreciated :)
Maybe there\'s something to be said for being different. We are who we are. What more could we ask for?

Both these look good, but I would keep in mind that the GPU is the part you can't upgrade later. The ram and drives are easily upgraded. It then comes down to how much you want to spend.

What I did was buy the base model with the best GPU, then upgrade with more ram and an ssd later.
