Ok, so steam crashed again same as the old error.  I reinstall and it's all and well until I start it up.

Now, my Modem is External. USB only - Speed Touch USB.  The modem connects to the phone line within the cord and then the cord keeps going into my USB port.

Modem---------------|--------= USB
---------------------Phone-Line

That's my best attempt at an illustration.

Now when I start up steam, my modem has 2 lights 1 for USB and one for ADSL, the USB flips out like a crack baby on withdraw, it blinks and blinks, and I get so much packetloss in game it's unbearable.

This problem used to be fixed by just closing out my friends list but now it seems unfixable.

Any ideas?

That's an Alcatel modem isn't it?

Cummon peeps, help the fella out if you hav eone of these and might be able to help diagnise the problem.

One thought tha tis non-modem, I assume your rates are set properly?  One of the Steam updates a while back totally borked most peoples' rate settings and we all needed to reset them to whatever we normally used, eg rate 15000, cl_updaterate 80, cl_cmdrate 80 etc.  Might be worth a quick check as when it happened to me I had exactly the same performance issues until I reset my rates.

Sounds like the old USB power problem.

The old aDSL modems draw power right upto the limit of the USB specs. Some motherboards can't supply power at this current so the USB modem shuts down. Looks like that is happening here.

There are a couple of alternatives;

1. Buy an aDSL router (the best option, as you can use more than one PC on the web then)
2. Buy a PCI aDSL modem
3. Buy an external powered USB hub

Personally, I'd go with option 1.

Have a look at www.adslguide.org.uk for all things aDSL
