Read a book recently, called Angels and Deamons which was quite good story, not to well written but hey, the point is it featured the illuminati.
I had my interest slightly piqued and Goggled it, but after several hours of wading through conspiracy theory sites I got a bit bored, so can anyone explain to me who and what this thing is?

I think it was a group of scientists, established by Adam Weishaupt in Bavaria?
But then some stuff also says it was an anti-Roman Catholic organisation, and was formed of scientists who hated the Catholic Church for their repression of science, and Galileo was a member?

Anyone able to shed any light?

If you enjoyed Angels and Demons, have a look at The Da Vinci Code. A much better book, same author, Dan Brown,  (very similar plot build) and gives you a lot more to go on.

The illuminati, the masons, McDonalds, they are all out to take over..

Enjoyed all of the book apart from the ending.

Descriptive BB. Which one? Da Vinci?

The ending to Angels and Demons is absolute tripe. Anything would have been better after that!

I did read somewhere that Mr Brown is in trouble for plagarism for the Da Vinci code book..

Sorry. The Da Vinci code was the one I was referring to. The ending wasn't bad I just felt that the book was a superb, can't put it down rollercoastering holiday read and the ending, in comaprison, was weak.

Havent read the other one.

'The Illuminati' is a card game. Not too bad but can get a bit boring when there are some 'munchkins' playing.
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

The illuminati are a group of people in powerful positions. IE corportates etc.

They worship certain symbolisms such as the owl etc (don't know much about that).

They are working towards a new world order, IE one super government controling everything.

They are very very secrative hence all the conspiracy and wild speculation on them.

One of the Illuminati's symbols is the eye in the pyramid(otherwise known as the all seeing eye), (probably stolen from another culture) Oh and look what you find on the back of the 1 dollar bill.

You might also like to try reading the Illuminatus trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. Fantastic books but have probably got nothing to do with the real Illuminati at all. Get it here.

Lots more reading about them here.

That ties in, the New Secular Order, which is another name for the Illuminati, it does indeed seem that some of it is on the back of the US 1 dollar note. Thats funny. Who designed the 1 dollar bill?

The three circles together make up the Great Seal of the United States, which was first used in 1782. The pyramid is dark to the west, a largely wild and unexplored part of Northern America in those days. The separated cap of the pyramid, carrying the all-seeing eye, symbolizes that the United States are still far from finished, but with God's help, this can be achieved. The Latin writing ANNUIT COEPTIS (God has favored our undertaking), emphasizes this. NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM (A New Order of the Ages) is a reminder of the recent separation from Great Britain. The Bald Eagle in the other circle does not wear a crown, relating to the same event. In addition, the unsupported shield in front of the eagle symbolizes the new country's ability to stand on its own, unified by congress, which is symbolized by the white bar on top of the shield. The eagle's beak says E PLURIBUS UNUM (From many, one). It holds an olive branch and arrows in its claws, symbolizing "we want peace, but are ready to fight".

The number thirteen, symbolizing the 13 original colonies (13 stripes on the flag), shows up over and again:

13 stars above the eagle
13 steps on the Pyramid
13 letters in ANNUIT COEPTIS
13 letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM
13 bars on that shield
13 leaves on the olive branch
13 fruits
13 arrows
The number 13 and all seeing eye are also symbols of the Illuminati and Freemasonry. The first President of the United States, George Washington, is generally belived to have been a Freemason, and is depicted in a painting of the laying of the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol building as having had the all seeing eye on top of a pyramid depicted on his masonic apron.
