Ok, bored with iTunes' increasing sluggishness on my slowly dying laptop, so I want a small, decent application to do all the playlist sorting/syncing etc...

Being a poverty stricken student, I don't want to spend money.

Having a wander around the intraweb came up with a couple of options:

Winamp with an iPod plug-in

ephpod

Anyone used these? Any feedback?

Also it appears that ephpod simply syncs the files, so what would be a good music/media player. I only use it to play back mp3s etc, no video or podcasts...

EDIT: Oh and there's a program called Songbird http://www.songbirdnest.com/ which seems pretty good - any one used it?

As a player, I would definitely recommend Winamp. I've always used it, and I haven't seen any reasons why to stop - I don't feel it miss any features :)
As for the iPod plug-in - you shouldn't need that I think :g: According to Winamp's own site, it is supported:
QuotePortable Device Sync - Supports iPod®, PlaysForSure®, and Creative® Devices
And if you in addition use ID3-TagIT to make sure all the tags on your files are in order, I don't think you should need much more :)

And if you use VideoLAN's VLC Mediaplayer for videos, you dont have to download any codecs :)

That is a very good player. Can host/stream as well.
