A Half-Life gamer claims to have hacked Valve's Steam servers and is holding the company to ransom. The hacker, going by the name of Maddox claims to have hacked into Valve's servers, the gaming company behind the popular Half-Life franchise. According to him, he has credit card numbers of Valve customers, and says he has files to prove it. He’s demanding “something good” from Valve in return for not releasing customer credit card information.

If his claims are true, thousands of credit card accounts could be compromised.

Valve is keeping this quiet - they have not yet made a formal announcement on the subject and, according to the hacker, they’re deleting all threads on their forums that mention the alleged hack.

To prove that the hacker really did hack Valve he has released the following information:

« Valve always said they dont keep CC information on their servers?
After "hacking" their DB a while ago (which they noticed,)

Here's a small proof:

me to expose ALL of the customers their information.

How stupid would it be to hack valve then publicly try to extort money from them? You'd be picked up by the police in 24 hours.

Without more to go on I would suggest that this be treated as another inquirer "scoop"!

dunno about you mate, but i aint risking it..

It looks like it's only Cyber Cafes but if it has been hacked your credit cards were used with a secure server, which means you're covered by fraud protection either with your card or by Valve. Also he'd be stupid to release the credit card info to the web because then he'd have nothing to bargin with, and serve a longer prison sentence. Also asking for "something good" not a specific ransom, bit strange.

Though I'm glad I paid for a copy of the game through Amazon.

I went on steam earlier, and now I've found my pockets are completely empty:blink:

I reckon....
Ok could it be a couple of mates playing on a server somewhere give 1 person their card no's. lets call him MR x.
There is no link between them other than this. He steals one or two card no's to muddy the audit trail, sets up bogus steam accounts call himself Sith (that is a joke)
Then, he contacts steam and pretends he has hacked in showing
valid credit card data ?
He offer his m8s a cut bobs your uncle fanny is his name or aunt.

marks out of 10 please.

p.s. remove the links in case they are the things designed to collect data, but don't click on something dodgy because it probably is, but it could be u getting scammed or scanned looking !

Does sound like a 'hoax' (0.o), as they're not allowed to keep your credit card details if I remember right.

But as your saying, better to be safe than sorry. I got my version through Play.com, so I should be fine.
