I have to go and do some field work in the UK, Sweden and Australia. Company pays for the first two, but if I want to go to Australia (most important company to visit regarding my paper) I have to pay for the plane ticket myself... and the prices are outrageous... but I wanna go :(

From DK I have to play £ 950 for a round trip as the cheapest. Departure sometime in may-july and stay for 1-2 weeks... quite open here. Edit: found a slightly cheaper via
http://ibe01.kilroytravels.com/kilroy_farebombing/DispatchServlet?kickstart=true&countrycode=ff&ticketType=YTH/STU&retMonth=7&depTo=adelaide&depYear=2007&depDay=1&isReturn=true&depFrom=K%F8benhavn&depMonth=6&retDay=1&retYear=2007&airline=null&cmd=request_show1
for abt. £ 900... "youth and student" type ticket.

Figured I could go to the UK and do my field work there, and then travel directly from the UK to Australia since any ticket from Denmark is via Heathrow anyway... perhaps you have seen some cheap charter trip from the UK? Or any ideas on how to get there cheap? Otherwise the nice lady in the bank will surely not be so nice anymore... and going to be bank wearing groin and teeth protection is just such a hassle...

I saw a sort of documentary once from a guy checked who how he could go by plane the best from the NL towards Aussieland.
Directly it costed alot but he thought it could be cheaper. If I remember correctly he did got to Aussieland in 3 different airplanes in total but saved alot of money.
Someone I know also went to Aussieland, will see if I can contact him about it.

Cool thanks mate!

The cheapest flight is Copenhagen -> Heathrow -> Melbourne -> Adelaide and is only 29 hours and 35 mins

Well, for that trip I deliberately didn't mention flighttime...:flirty:
You want cheap ---> lots of flighttime..
You want fast ---> lots of costs.

EDIT:
I'm assuming you're going to Sydney? Or another place in Australia?

Heck, even if it took 59 hrs and was cheaper I'd do it. I don't have the money and really need and want to go :crying:

So the company won't pay for the travel to the most important part/meeting? Thats a tad silly innit? :eyebrow:

That is what people tell me and I kinda agree. It sucks :( I am not paid by them though, only on contract to do research and I am only doing my thesis for them. I am lucky that they take such an interest in my paper that they will ship me off to UK and Sweden... but the co. in Australia is the newest with the biggest issues and the one of course with the biggest differences... we are still negotiating, but doubt they will pay.. gut feeling.

So what do you do... you want to do the good paper that will give you the fun job you want. And i want to work with what my paper deals with. I pay and get the work done with style :eyebrow:

Those 4 looked the most interesting out a search I did.
It might cost you a bit but I reckon it will pay itself back in the long run.
I'll still have alook for several planes another time.

i seem to remember that british airways did/do a Round the World ticket which is valid for 6 months. It used to cost about £750-900 but as the name suggests it provides round the world travel for 6 months:doh:

then you could suggest your firm that they take off the costs for your first two flights and you'll pay the difference.

That is some nice finds. £ 690 from Gatwick. I have to be a bit careful with those supersearcher sites, but seems like there is money to save by doing it this way. Any brits who can recommend any of the sites?
