Never tried it that way, so can't really comment.  It is relatively simple, the only thing it loses is the DPS that you usually apply during the shadow phase, so the fight might take longer if you take a 30 second dps break between portal phases.  Then again, if people dying in the shadow phase is what's killing you then this might be an ideal solution.
