IIRC from back in the days it is because the prefix field is simply not long enough. Need a new player profile with the tag in player name.

It's not something you need permission to set is it? I thought you could just add it and change it to whatever.

But yeah, when BF2 first came out there wasn't any clan tag ability at all, so a lot of the BF2 dMw-ers who were eligible to use it had the tag as part of their base username. Added bonus being that if someone else had the same name as you you could still use it, as they were unlikely to have it with the -=[dMw]=- precursor. By the time the clan tag ability was added, IIRC anyways, BF2 had tailed off a bit in dMw.
