I just had my Nokia 6300 replaced under warranty as the reception was gradually getting worse and worse, to the point where I was being told 'No network available' when trying to place a call, whilst my friend who stood next to me and was also Orange had a full strength signal.  Has anyone else experience this reception degradation with this or other mobile telephones?

My boss had something similar yeah a few months ago with one of the newest Nokia's.
After a month he switched back to his previous phone as the reception was getting worse but also the sound (he could understand people quit well but his voice couldn't be heard almost).

So it seems to be happening sometimes yeah (also Googled and some more people seem to have the same problem).

I won a nokia 5300 in a competition once and it's reception on orange was terrible, couldn't get signals in a whole pile of places. I never compared it side by side with anyone else on orange, but in high signal areas it would struggle with 1 or 2 bars (and then cut off when I tried to use it).
It wasn't a great phone and I've since replaced it, but now you've mentioned this it could be the same issue, I don't recall it happening to gradually was within the first 4-5 months just would get on my nerves...didn't think much of it at the time just slated orange.

Sounds faulty to me.

I've had all sorts of problems with Orange and reception so finally, after several years, have switched.

I've also got a 6300 and when I compare the signal with a motorola phone side-by-side - the motorola is always stronger.

While most Nokia users are fanatically loyal to the company, it's true that Nokia do have a less that perfect reliability record. That being said I have never had a single issue with any Nokia I have owned (going back to 1993)

Could be the phone, the network or sadly a combination of both. O2 seem to get a good press and I have no issue with them. Their 3.5G coverage seems to be expanding on an almost daily basis too.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Replacement Nokia arrived last night.
Stood at the door with the delivery guy and saw no bars on signal strength.
Took the back off the phone, took out battery & SIM.
Reinstalled battery & SIM into new phone.
Full bars signal strength shown immediately!

It was defintely a fault, so if you're signal strength degrades over time it might be worth reporting it as faulty and get the phone carcass replaced.

Nokias quality in the new models sucks. I remember when I got my Nokia 3310. It was in the late 90's. You just couldn't break it. But all the new Nokias suck. If you drop it for once, it's dead. Too much modern technology I suppose:g:
