my first pitfall was listening to a pc world advisor. i know i know i dont know what i was thinking either (hangs head in shame) still i dont think its all that bad.

i have a belkin 54g w/l router (as i  have laptop i cant be arsed to trail cables around the flat. The problem is i have a sneeking feeling that im missing the modem part. Im not a hundread percent sure what im doing.

this is a step by step list of what i think i have to do.

1) get adsl switched on by bt
2) install splitters into phone socket
(this is what im unsure about)
3) plug lead from belkin router into splitter rj45 socket.

4) wearily i listened to PCW person when they said that was what i had to do, but there all fecking idiots and i think that i still need a modem? that is what im unsure about.

any advise much appreciated.

1) Yep.  Get BT to do their line checks and confirm an activation date with your ISP.

I didn't get whether you're unsure about 2) or 3) so had a stab at explaining both  :?

2) Splitters - are in essence a low-pass filter to prevent the high-frequency ADSL signalling from interfering with lower frequency voice conversations.  You only need one for each BT socket where you'll plug a device like a phone, fax machine, PC w/ 56K modem, or sky digibox in.  An ADSL modem should (in theory - not always in practice) be okay living with the lower frequencies on the line, and you'll only need a splitter for the socket you plug your modem in if you intend sharing it with a phone.

3)  I've only read one review of the Belkin 54g, and from that my understanding is it's purely a 4-port router with firewall and 802.11g access point.  I believe you'll still need to have an ethernet ADSL modem upstream of it to use your connection.  Anyone else with more knowledge of this product feel free to jump in here and correct me...

I doubt you could connect your router directly to your splitter anyway as it has an 8-way RJ45 input on the back for a CAT5 standard ethernet cable and the splitter has a 4-way RJ11 socket.  I don't think the supplied cable would have differing connectors on either end, to enable it to fit.

Easy way to tell if you have a modem in your router:

If you have an RJ11 (4pins) socket, that's a modem plug. If you only have a couple of RJ45 sockets (8 pins) then you need an external modem.

Cadaver is right, you cannot connect RJ45 into RJ11 and expect it to work, you will have RJ11 -RJ11 for modem, RJ45 - RJ45 for ethernet.

Or look on their webby for the spec, I would have given you a few models that are recommended for the job, I am a NetGear fan, although I have an Alcatel 570 wireless router.

I think they only do a USB modem.  Which would mean you'd have to connect it to a PC, then (probably by doing something with Internet Connection Sharing in Windows) connect your router to a NIC on that PC.  This means you'd have to leave that PC on everytime you wanted to use your wireless LAN to get at the internet.

The way I see it, you've two options:

1) Buy a suitable external ADSL modem with an ethernet, not USB, interface.  Connect it to your phone line and hook it up to your router's input port.

This option means you retain your 54Mbps wireless LAN capability.  It also gives you more flexibility, and the means to independantly: change the router at a future date if the wi-fi spec is updated to give even greater data rates, or change the ADSL modem for a cable modem if you move to an area that doesn't have ADSL coverage.

2) Take your router back to PC World.  Claim you were misled, and it's not fit for the purpose it was sold to you for.  Get a refund and buy an all-in-one box that does the job.  For instance, the NetGear DG824MUK (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG...G824M.asp?view=) looks to do just what you're after (albeit with 11Mbps 802.11b rather than 'g' wi-fi).  Dabs do it for around £140.

This option means you only need the one box kicking around your flat, and should also be easier to set up.

'tis up to you.
