After a discussion with Mats this morning we thought it would be prudent to post up here. Essentially I've been toying with something formal for a while but not made the jump either way. Basically with the numbers we have across the different skill ranges we thought it may be interesting to have a compo or ladder.

The questions are team or individual. With the latter you’d still have to play for the team to get the points. It would also prevent the team swaps being an issue.
The alternate is to run a team over a campaign once every couple of weeks and see who comes out, we’d need to seed the teams to keep it fair but it shouldn’t be too hard. We’d also need the team swap mod installed.

It may help get a good habit in place and keep the community pushing the game as an active supported competitive game. Whilst it’s very popular now, who’s to say it won’t wear thin in a few months. So some background ladder may help maintain the interest and the community buy in.
With the busy servers now, it’s the best time to get everyone hooked in. Whilst in other games we’ve used competition as a resurrection tool, why not start out with it so we ingrain it?

I don’t think that the competition should come first, dropping in and playing should always take precedence, but it allows people to enjoy things a little more once settled into how to play things. I’d also want to keep things fairly informal, so team swaps etc would have to be factored in with a substitute system.

Historically if we look at how CS blossomed, the pages of tactics, git spots, funny screenshots all contributed. If we get everyone into that early  we can really push the game as a community cash cow.

Thoughts?

I have seen that CAL have setup a L4D league so it must be possible to find some good way to go about it.

Some form of compo is good imo i would be up for helping out where needed

Team based compo would be best as i think most of us play /and like being in a team

bloody hell that was a big post for me

I think this would be good. I'd definitely be up for a regular barfing. We'd obviously have to avoid the regular Monday, Thursday and Friday schedules.

Running this might be a bit convoluted at first but I'm sure we'd get the hang of it.
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

Right how about trying to set up a little tournament? Nothing formal like a league but just a one-off competition?
This would be useful so we would know what works or doesn't and what we learn we can use for the LAN and the proposed league?

Set dates and times.
Troll for volunteers.
Create teams of 4.
Pick one map.
Set up some ground-rules, i.e. no boss spawns?
Anything else?

Sounds good...

no boss spawns?
If we install the mod to stop the team juggle it'll be sorted.

One campaign, 2 teams of 4. Perfect. I'm in.

If you guys can tie it in to the proposed LAN comp that would be great.

As Sn00ks says, it gives us a template to work from and we can also judge how long it'd take. We can then work it into the LAN schedule.

Thanks

I was thinking along the lines of more teams. Team A & B play against each other and team C & D against each other. We pick one map and each team takes it in turn to be Survivors and Infected. If we leave boss spawns in then we would probably have to have four rounds to even it out a bit.

Nicked this from UGC.

Matches are setup on an individual map, aka campaign segment. We play one map per match, and we repeat it twice to provide a balance for AI randomness. Teams play survivors/infected in an ABBA format, where the home team chooses survivor/infected first (The Home Team decides if they want to start as ClanA or ClanB).
5.2.1 Repeat play on one Map as follows:
Matchround 1 is the 1st half of the match played on the map of the week.
                   - mapround 1: Team A survivor, Team B infected
                 - mapround 2: Team B survivor, Team A infected
Matchround 2 is the second half of the match, a repeat of the same map, in reverse team order.
                 - mapround 1: Team B survivor, Team A infected
                 - mapround 2: Team A survivor, Team B infected
    [/LIST]
Winner is the team with the most points. If there is a draw they play a third round.
