Ok an update, bought a new psu managed to get the hdd to start again problem is now when I try to do a clean install of windows 7 on to my new hardrive it gets to the blue windows screen but no window comes up to start install. It then after 5 or so seconds my pc switches of.   I have also replaced the cr2032 battery for the mobo, any suggestions?

I had the same problem (the 1st time my PC messed up) and overcame it by putting w7 disk in and running setup from a command prompt.
Cant remember how I got the CP window open though.
A new install did not cure the problem as the PC went back into hibernate after a day or 2.

This sounds more like my problem every post...I had exactly the same issues with a new PSU.
I'd put money on it being hibernate at the root of the prob.

Is the CPU seated ok? Cooler ok? If the cpu overheats the pc will cut out.

Check the mobo to see if there are any bulging capacitors.

Can you boot from a cd and run memtest (download from here ) Not just to check your mem but to see if your PC will function without a HDD.

Right, got windows to half install (the first bit) it then restarts as expected but then when it gets to the loading bar to complete installation it switches off again.  The strange thing was I managed to get this far by unplugging my usb mouse and keyboard but now I just can't get passed this.  Could be possible then that my CPU is overheating? It's just I can't understand this being the case as it went through the first part of the setup without switching off.

Blunt is it the motherboard you mean is in hibernation? As I have a clean new hdd I'm trying to install windows onto

I couldn't tell you, I got myself so confused I gave up and sent it for repair, twice.
the 1st guy I sent it to apparently just flashed the bios and said it worked, when I got it home it was worse than when I gave it to him.
At this stage I tried re-installing W7, and just about managed it by using Command prompt.
However it didn't work for long, and was soon back in the non starting cycle.
Then I took it to a reputable firm who sorted it with the method above.
