You install PS3 Media Server on the PC which is storing your media. You do not store the media on the PS3 itself. The PS3 just plays whatever is stored on the other PC.

Yes, it does have HDMI output.

You used to be able to upgrade the hard drive on the old PS3 models, but I don't know if this is possible with the new ones.

Thanks tutonic,

I have bought the ps3 and it is working.
But do you know what codecs i need to install too?

Are there more fun things i don't know about for a PS3?

If you have a Windows 7 PC, it acts as a media server by default and you can share your music / photo / video library with other devices (e.g. PS3)

The PS3 natively supports DivX, AVI and MP4 codecs but WMV has to be enabled in the settings menu on the PS3.

Using PS3MediaServer for PC, Mac or Linux enables streaming from other OS's and gives you some nice extra features, like video preview thumbs and custom thumbnails. Just create a "folder.png" or in the case of file specific thumbs, "myfilm.avi" gets a "myfilm.avi.cover.png" file to create a custom thumbnail on the PS3.

I use a Buffalo LinkStation DUO NAS drive on the network with media streamer enabled. That way my PS3 and SumVision Cyclone MKV2 can both view films / TV when my PC is shut down for the night.

You can also COPY films from the media centre onto the PS3 HD and play them from there.

Also, you can plug in an external USB drive (any size) as long as it's formatted FAT32 or FAT the PS3 can read it. You can then play the films direct from the drive.

Just watch out - FAT32 won't support more than 2TB on a single drive.[/COLOR]

Whel i have windows 7, and à linkxes router, but THE ps3 now connected 2 times to the ps3 media software on my pc.
I don't know why it doesn't connects everything time.

Those Maps you were talking about, do i put them on THE ps3?

If i have large movies ( blueray) on my external harddrive can i play them direct on THE ps3?

If those large files are on my pc can i play them through wifi to the ps3?
Or is it better to use a cable?

Hope to hear from you

Thanks King

It's also worth a notice that the PS3 only has a 802.11b connection (54 mbit) and thats only good for streaming max 720p. If you want to stream 1080p to it you need to use a cabled connection.

PS3 mediaserver also works with subtitles as long as you set it up right. The transcoding (this is also valid for blu-ray stuff) stuff requires quite a bit of CPU power so the cheapest of the boxes will not work. You should at least have a Core 2 Duo or newer. Another thing to remember when using ps3 media server or linux based XBMC is that you won't (at least at this point) get no better sound quality than DTS. (It usually isn't a problem since almost all content on the web use DTS as audio source).
Maybe I sound like a smuck, but you can seriously hear the difference between DTS and Dolby TrueHD.
Also when using PS3 Media server you will not get 3D as the DLNA protocol only supports 1080p. (3D content is 3840x1080)

A bit messy post but you get the picture.

Brilliant post, and YES there is a serious difference on DTS and DTS MASTER / Dolby TrueHD...
