IGN reports that EA are planning to "unveil" BF4 at this month's Game Developer's Conference.

I have very low hopes. I think we'll see more dumbing down the game in favour of cussing (must get parental advisory rating!) and lens flare.

Coupled with "FaceBook for gun nuts", split player-base with nine-hundred DLC's and what will almost certainly be similar DRM to Sim City, I am not going to pre-order BF4 and won't buy it unless they return the features BF2 had, before the franchise was dumbed-down for consoles and became a COD-whipped shadow of its former self.

  • In game VOIP not tied to friends list (I want to talk to my squad and team, not marry them)
  • A commander (every force needs leadership) as a 64 player server with 32 lone wolves each side is chaos!
  • Seven player classes (not four) - they all had valid reasons to exist - reducing them to "simplify" removed a tactical element.
  • Spawn on squad leader - it helps team play and squad cohesion.
  • LAN support - why the hell not?
  • Mod support - the only reason for the existence of the franchise is because BF1942 had mod support.
  • battle recorder and a spectator mode - admin'ing is a nightmare with these missing.

BF3 was a console-led development bodge-job. After release it came out that for the PC version, DICE had outsourced the GUI to a third-party company which had never worked a video game before and it shows.

I'd love to see all of those features Arithon. We're not asking for much, just the features that have been part of the franchise since, you know, it started. What we'll actually get:

- More facebook-style social networking features
- Fewer/smaller maps
- Paid-for DLC unlocks
- A release date at least a month after the PS4 release

It will earn EA an absolute fortune in pre-orders alone, and be a relatively minor update to BF3.

Go on EA/DICE, prove me wrong.

QFT.

Would love to see them do something interesting, but I think I'll be too busy getting into Arma III to notice tbh. I know I will end up getting it, and probably enjoy it too, but I will sure feel dirty about it.
