My laptop is not one of the ones sony are supporting with the windows upgrade, so there's a chance some stuff won't work and It'll probably be hard to get upgraded software such as the different Blu-ray player that they'd otherwise bundle with the upgrade pack the supported laptops would get. Given this sounds like a potential pita ... what would I actually gain in Windows 8 (pro) over Windows 7 (home premium) that is a good enough reason to bet £25 on it working?

 I guess if it fails on here I can try putting it on my drastically underpowered netbook...?

Setting aside the UI which has been much discussed. W8 is a little faster, slicker, less resourceful and has a few nice features such as improved Explorer and Process manager.

To be honest IMHO it's not worth the investment though due to the recommendation being a full wipe and re install. I tried an upgrade but it was very flakey.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

It's probably not worth the hassle, Smilo's got it bang on in my opinion. It's a minor upgrade to W7 with a few nice tweaks here and there, but for some reason they hid it behind a slightly baffling Metro interface.

Thanks for the thoughts. Think I'll put the money into beer instead, and invest the install time in drinking it. :D
