The Ring (Ringu)

I thought Sadako posted something about thsi film but I'll be buggered if I can find it. I know the Japanese version is supposed to be infinately better than the US offering, but does anyone have a clue what the hell it was about.

I'm a bit dim and I got utterly lost at the end. Please help a thicky  :unsure:

Yes the Japanese version is better than the U.S. version. I came across this movie back in 2001 and it blew me away. A great horror movie without lots of gore, naked dumb american teens and stupid mutated flesheating natives. There is actually another remake made in Korea called "The Ring Virus".

Ringu is has its roots Japanese folklore but it is not showcased bluntly but is displayed between the lines. The plot outline:

After the death of her cousin Tomoko, reporter Reiko hears stories of a videotape that kills everyone who sees it exactly one week after viewing. At first she discounts the rumors, but when she learns that Tomoko's friend (who watched the video with her) died at exactly the same time, she begins to investigate. After viewing the tape herself, strange things start happening, and so she teams up with her ex-husband to try to stop the death clock that has once again begun ticking.

Ringu is one of very few horror movies I got really scared of. There is one(!)specialeffect in the entire movie. The story is very solid and well told. The soundtrack gives you the creeps.

I should explain....I've seen the American version all the way through. And i was on board plot wise until the last few scenes. But I lost the plot at the end and have no idea what the final meaning of the film is,

Could someone explain what the last scene was trying to tell us. Yes I know I'm thick

Well i cant remember the ring that exactly, but i think their point was that she didnt need to be found or saved the girl. She wanted attention, and by copying the tape they made her heard to more people...

But i liked the japaneese version better.. much more moody, and not all thoose speciel effects and hollywood cutting...

The only way to get away from Sadako's (Samara's) wrath is that you have make a copy of the video and let someone else watch it. By doing this you tranfer the curse to that person who has seven days until he/she dies (if they don't transfer it if you catch my drift.) In the American version the movie ends with the mother and child making a copy of the video. The last line in the movie is from the son "what happens to the one we show it to". In the end we can't get away from the wrath of Sadako/Samara without passing the evil along.

In the Japanese version this is almost the peak of the movie as the mother drives down an endless road towards an almost terminator like ending. You know the troubled sky before a storm. You can only hear her in a telephone conversation with her father and she asking "I need to ask for a favor father .... for my son". And the camera pans over to the passenger seat where there is a VCR and a tape.

I must say there are some major differences between the Ring and Ringu. The horses and the tree in ring is somthing they have made up themselves. I recommend that you watch Ringu but I know that you probably prefer the first version that you've seen. I think it is that way for all as I think the Japanse version is best.

Yes the japanese version is by far and away the best and as usual hollywood has spoilt what is a classic film.
