The developer preview for the next version of Android is out today. It's also been confirmed that it won't be made available for the Nexus 5x or 6P. That isn't a surprise as technically neither phone should have received 8.1. either and they did. Security updates will run to November 2018. And to be honest for the first time I really don't care.

I'm not sure when it was, but at some point around Android 6 or 7 the OS become so polished that it didn't really look any different when the new version came out. My phone didn't run any faster or do anything amazing that it didn't do before. I long ago dumped the stock launcher, I use Evie, so the visual tweaks don't much matter either. Regardless of what the media might scream and shout about and what AV vendors might try to deny the OS is pretty bomb proof and Androids built in security is decent enough if you are sensible about what you do and don't install.

So Android P will arrive and I'm pretty sure I won't care. Almost all the other Android users who don't own a pure Google device won't see this OS at all. Samsung, Motorola, LG etc won't update any but their latest flagship phones to P and I doubt budget manufacturers will either. Some won't even offer security patches, but that's another problem.

So for the first time a new version of Android is coming and... so what. How times have changed since they days of  Kitkat, Ice Cream, and Lollipop.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.
