I do at least 50% of my web browsing on my tablet (Nexus 10), but the thing is years old and starting to play up.

So I'm looking for a new tablet.

My son has a Mac book pro? Or something, which is a bit bigger. He also has an apple pencil which is quite amazing.

Please tell me the there is a non-apple product that matches it, because if there isn't...

Mac Book Pro is a laptop, not a tablet. You may mean an iPad Pro which is huge (12.9) screen.

I have an iPad which I love. Yes it's an apple and I'm sure the crowd will be along shortly to bash but it's simply easy and doesn't go wrong.

I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet, which I love. My one is a few years old now, but I wouldn't update it unless it too stopped working, as it does everything I need it to. I have no issues with Samsungs flavour of android, but coming from android with no excess it will feel a bit different, of course. I'd have a play with one in a shop and see what you think.

Have a look at their Galaxy Tab S range. They are the android ones. I think they're on S2 now, but I believe an S3 release is due 'any time now'. That's likely to mean early next year as it's probably too close for them to release before the holidays now. So depends if you wanted to wait till next year or get 2015s model now.

Also, remember that Black Friday sales are coming up real soon, so it is worth waiting a few weeks to get a deal on price.

My 2 cents, take a look a the Google Pixel C.  At £400 for the Pixel C versus £729 for the iPad Pro the Pixel wins hands down on value.

The picture competition is won comfortably by the Pixel.   The resolution on the iPad Pro is higher, but the pixel density is not, so the Pixel gives a much nicer screen picture via 308ppi (2560x1800) with Apple only having 264ppi (2732x2048).

Apple's screen is a little bigger (12.9" versus Pixel's 10.2"), but that's also how they get the bigger resolution by using a bigger display with a lower ppi.  If Apple's display were only 10.2" it would provide a resolution of just 2160x1619 (compared to Pixel's 2560x1800 for the same screen size).

If the stylus is the functionality that you want then you need to identify what you want to do with it.   If it is normal basic stuff then there are several good choices for the Pixel that work well.  If you're looking for a mobile graphics studio then you might want to to look at the Samsung, or the Surface Pro 4, or the Apple.

Hope this helps.

I have the smaller 8inch version and love it, great tablet.  Don't be fooled by the other model numbers and crap this Tab S2 is the best one they do. (silly tab4 cheapo thing)

BrotherTobious in IRC also suggested the google pixel c

I got the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (i5) recently and love it.  I like that I can run all my desktop apps and use it as a laptop, then when I want to browse in front of the TV or watch Youtube/Plex I can remove the keyboard and use as a tablet.  Great all in one device that replaced my old Nexus tablet and Dell laptop.  Not as cheap as most of the other options but if money isn't too much of a concern then I'd recommend it.

I thought about getting one of those or a Surface Book. Worth it? I was put off by Kreg initially:

Quote from: kregoron;406406Currently testing the Surface 4 pro 256gig/16/i7, and sadly it seems to have the same issues as the Surface 3 pro has with thermal issues.

It seems that after 3-4 months, the thermal efficiency of the cooling goes down the drain, it starts to do some heavy throttling with just a single browser running. Decreasing performance to about 50% :/ So far we have returned 400-450 out of 1100 Surface 3 pro, and 8 of our 10 Surface 4 pro exibit the same behavior :(
Its really a shame as the surface is a brilliant piece of kit when running! I love the flexibility it adds to your work day.

The surface book on the other hand looks really impressive so far, sadly we have only been able to get our hands on two so far. And i weren't the lucky one this time.

Kreggy any update?

From what I'd read these issues have been resolved and I've not experienced any on mine but I look forward to an update as I only have one I can comment on.

Sorry for hijacking ...... but any reason why you didn't go for the surface book ?

Cost was the main factor, the Surface Book was overkill for my needs and i don't like the way the keyboard and screen join.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I'll be researching all your suggestions.

I'm sure Galaxy Note 7 will be fixed and in serious abundance soon enough ;-)

They were telling passengers on my flight from the US last night to declare if they had one and if they did they had to hand it over or not go on the flight. Seems the US Aviation have formally banned it from being over US Airspace.
Cheers, Bert
