It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.  I'm happy to wait for the final game but any of the early backers who are unhappy about the length of time it's taking seem to have the right to a refund under the original T&C's.

In the full letters, CIG were constantly stating that he doesn't have the right for a refund, even if it was in their own TOS.

He probably managed to get a refund because he involved a bunch of regulatory authorities, and CIG wouldn't risk the flak of going up against them.

Just because CIG state he doesn't have the right to a refund doesn't mean he doesn't by law.  The fact they have paid out does leave the door open for others in the same situation.

Hoping not too many people actually ask for their money back I'm thinking it's not that unfair (although it is a bit daft) to ask for a refund now. Most original Kickstarter backers and very early supporters signed up for a smallish Indie game backed by players that looked to make a game for a few million dollars. As the money rolled in CIG bolted on more and more bits to the existing core game. This became more an more unwieldy and difficult to plan and develop as the goal posts moved by a few million dollars each month.

At some point though CIG bit the bullet and Star Citizen moved from being an indie developed game to becoming a full blown AAA monster. It's clear that sitting on $100,000,000+ CIG had a big rethink and started a new development plan, returned many of the existing ships back to the developers for a rework and in some sense started the development again.

While personally I think it's just dumb to reject a much larger game with a much larger vision, I also think that if someone dropped some money expecting to see an indie style Space MMO launch back in 2014/2015 rather than what we will now get in late 2016/2017, then fair enough. Everyone has the right to be an idiot :-)

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.
