Read throuhg the website but it doesnt tell you what sort of game it is. Is it an RTS or a shoot em up like Half-life/Quake?

Yes! It is both. It is a RTS that you can view from first person angle or any angle you want. This game inspired the "homeworld" games.

the first one was truly excellent :D actually made for decent multiplayer fights as well. I found it to be about the right balance of choice and complexity for planning strategies. great fun! beta testing thingy was pretty much closed though, there's a surprise :)

The first GC's major selling point was that it was a "real time tactical strategy" game. The "tactical" there referring to it being all about your battle tactics, with no resource gathering or base-building. The first game was damned tight, and although the sequel looks like it's just more of the same, in this case it's no bad thing.

Edit: Oh, and the original is available on the same budget label as HL for a tenner, with the expansion pack thrown in. It's well worth a look.
