SMS spam on the rise?

My girlfriend got an unsolicited text last month that cost her £1.50 and looking around it seems this sort of thing is the next scam we have to be wary of! I was wondering if anyone else had been hit by it. She's on the 3 uk network, though I imagine it's not network specific.
