A friend of mine who is a priest rolled need on this while in a group of guild mates. Someone commented that in a  proper raid the priest would get into grief for rolling on what is a mage item. I can see why a mage might like this item but I wonder why they would have more right to it than a priest. Something about the stamina or just that it says Arcane in the name :eyebrow:

Bit confused.

If we take it like old school, mage = damage, priest = heal.
So mage gets more use with that as there are better ones with only + healing to priests. And as in raids Priest needs the + healing.
But if the priest wants to be a dmg priest then....

It really depends on the spec of the Priest... if it was Shadow then there's no problem on rolling on it... if the Priest was Holy (healy spec) then it would only be alright to roll on it if the Mage didnt want it :P

If the priest is Shadow, ain't there better ones with + shadow dmg ?

The priest is holy and is the group healer. The ring was better than anything they had and so they were able to use it and get benefit from it. So, they argue, they had just as much right to it as another cloth wearer ?

Thanks for the replies I can see why a mage would be unhappy.

Unfortunatly most PUG players think very black and white. Where we are ok with having some1 else take an item for upgrade, Pick ups tend to get very offended when some1 else intervenes on thier turf (ie this ring is probably marginaly better for the mage).

I'd take a different approach to most here and tend to say that while it might have been an upgrade for the priest, the priest will have access to way better upgrades that are geared for healer.  At best the healer would be rolling on it for an off-spec not a main healing use as it would be replaced immediately by any number of healing rings which are way better than that ring.  For a dps caster though the ring rocks.

My advice to the priest would be to seek the free healing upgrades out there, go look at them on wowdb.com or wherever he prefers.  That ring is a decent dps caster ring so I would have left it for the mage and only rolled if nobody else needed it for main use.  The fact it beats what he currently had is not a reason to need off-spec loot which will be replaced almost immediately and deprive a dps caster of a decent ring.

Well first of all he is a holy priest which means its an off-spec ring for him.
For the mage it would be a main spec upgrade.
However its still hard to say imo that the priest was wrong. IF it was only a marginal upgrade for the mage i do not see a problem with the priest getting it. However if it is a big upgrade for the mage and he wanted it for main use the the mage should have had it. Though i must say good healing rings are hard to get imo, some rep based factions supplyt them though, like kharazan rep exalted ring or for the neck the SSO exalted necklace arent bad at all.

I'd say need before greed. If something drops which someone can use for his/her main spec they should get priority. Although in PuGs there often is a Free-For-All mentality; in which case it depends a bit on the situation. Although, generally, I'd pass if someone needs it.

On the other hand, who cares so much about 5 man/heroic drops that it's worth starting an argument about and/or snatch them from someone that has a better use for them? It's not like they're special or anything. You'll replace most of them (with few exceptions) before you know it; be it by craftables, rep/badges stuff or otherwise.

P.S.: In WotLK, this main/off-spec stuff might get a bit more complicated with the whole 'dual-spec' thing Blizzard is planning to introduce. Additionally gear is being consolidated, +dmg and +healing is being replaced by +spellpower for example. People will be after the same stuff more often, so meh ...

This is true however i also reckon the loot tables will be smaller so it will drop more often which means the chance of getting it is bigger, since it will drop more.
