L4D - What does a newbie need to know?

What you also need to know is that it takes 3 months to download from Steam after you have purchased it.   Bought it yesterday lunchtime and the PC has been online and downloading ever since, often at the lofty speed of 10KB/s.  Current progress:

Downloading now for 29 hours.
Current speed: 13.7KB/s
Download Progress: 81%

See you on Thursday, it should be done by then.

Mine did that. I'm sure it was because my ISP limited my IP throughput. I bounced the router, stopped the connection and restarted it after midnight and it sailed through.

I don't have capping, but that's what it felt like.

I bought the game on disk so I can't comment on this one. But I bought GTA IV (>10GB download) and that only took about 6 hours. I'm on 20meg broadband through virgin, but it shows the steam servers can handle fast speeds. It could be you isp, or it could be that L4D is constantly in the most popular game section of steam and they don't have enough mirrors of the game.
Juggling Hard Disks over concrete floors ends in tears 5% of the time.

Might be worth pausing it and restarting or exiting steam and then restarting steam. Both of those options have helped me speed up downloads in the past.

took about 3 hours to download for me. thats with 4 other people on the network. (10 meg broadband)

It completed last night - downlaod speed jumped up late last night and it was done by 11.00pm.  Go figure.
