Just been doing a bit of reading about it, basically it appears your virtual memory (pagefile) is messed up which can prevent windows from loading. The partmgr.sys is a microsoft file which actually controls it.

I came across what seems to be one fix so far where you choose a quick install with NTFS when it starts reinstalling Windows. I'll have a bit more of a look though and see if I come across anything else.

Stop 0x00000050 or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

The Stop 0x50 message indicates that requested data was not in memory. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause Stop 0x50 messages.

Possible Resolutions:

• If you added new hardware recently, remove and replace the hardware to determine if it is causing or contributing to the problem. Run diagnostics software supplied by the hardware manufacturer to determine if the component has failed.

• Stop 0x50 messages can also occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If the file name is listed, you need to disable, remove, or roll back that driver. If not, disable the recently installed service or application to determine if this resolves the error. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the hardware manufacturer for updates. Using updated drivers and software is especially important for network interface cards, video adapters, backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools. If an updated driver is not available, attempt to use a driver from a similar device in the same family. For example, if printing to a Model 1100C printer causes Stop 0x50 errors, using a printer driver meant for a Model 1100A or Model 1000 might temporarily resolve the problem

Someone tried memtesting their memory, but it returned OK, would make sense if it was the pagefile right?

This is for Windows 2000 but seems relevant, especially halfway through the last paragraph:

Explanation:

This Stop message occurs when requested data is not found in memory. The system generates a fault, which normally indicates that the system looks for data in the paging file. In this circumstance, however, the missing data is identified as being located within an area of memory that cannot be paged out to disk. The system faults, but cannot find, the data and is unable to recover. Faulty hardware, a buggy system service, antivirus software, and a corrupted NTFS volume can all generate this type of error.

User Action:

This Stop message usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed hardware (usually related to defective RAM, either main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM). If hardware has been added to the system recently, remove it to see if the error recurs. If existing hardware has failed, remove or replace the faulty component. Run hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer. For details on these procedures, see the owners manual for your computer. Another cause of this Stop message is the installation of a buggy system service. Disable the service and determine if this resolves the error. If so, contact the manufacturer of the system service about a possible update. If the error occurs during system startup, restart your computer, and press F8 at the character-mode menu that displays the operating system choices. At the resulting Windows 2000 Advanced Options menu, choose the Last Known Good Configuration option. This option is most effective when only one driver or service is added at a time. Antivirus software can also trigger this Stop message. Disable the program and determine if this resolves the error. If it does, contact the manufacturer of the program about a possible update. A corrupted NTFS volume can also generate this Stop message. Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and repair disk errors. Restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition. If the hard disk is SCSI, check for problems between the SCSI controller and the disk. Finally, check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device or driver causing the error. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve it. Thanks for the information Lee, It looks like I could have a faulty piece of kit somewhere.
As I haven't added anything new to the machine.

I could possibly be a windows update but I have them on automatic so not excatly sure.

just to recap - I can see the drive in bios but everything else I try acts as if no drive is present.

You can run a live CD of Ubuntu which basically only exists in ram i.e. it writes nothing to the hard drive. So that might indicate that your ram is OK. This is looking ore like windows falling over than a serious problem with your hardware. Just my opinion.

Can run Ubuntu for live CD and Usb but can not see the internal HD

Ok I have bought a drive caddy and added the troublesome drive.

But when i plug in the usb, I get the bubble near my clock saying new device etc but I can not see the device on my computer.

If I plug the usb into my Ubuntu laptop I can see where it says USB drive but can not access it
"unable to mount" is the error

I have tried loads of tuts on the ubuntu so I have decided to go back to windows PC

I cannot understand why the device would show in my computer.

Do I need some software?

So to clarify

I have the broken HD in a Caddy
When I plug in the USB
I get a pop up device found and ready to use

Go to my computer

No Drive displayed...

How do I solve this problem?

windows disk management interface should now pop up, try looking for a deaktivated/offline disk of some sort

Ok, tried that but can not see the drive.

I did a rescan but nothing happened although I did get the pop up again...

Any more advise, I dont wanna lose this disk dont care whats on it just want the disk

that just shows its detected a USB device, but the HDD hasnt, else it would show a model number/device id.. the disk is either no installed properly in the hdd enclosure, or something is wrong with the disk making it unable to initialise..

Just for clarification: is the hdd a IDE or sata disk?
