I am sure you have all seen this film, its probably one of my favourite films and I have watched 100s of times, I love the story, the atmosphere, the direction the characters.
I also love the book but seperate the two in my mind as I feel a film about do androids dream of electic sheep could have been handled in so many ways its difficult to do a total book to film comparision.

Anyway, I was shocked to hear from my mate (who usually likes decent films) thought of it as a boring overrated piece of junk!!

So I just wanted to get the thoughts of the dead men, is this film a classic or marmite?

With you on this Zoot love this film!!!!

Classic.  Your mate's brain has turned into marmite.

I've watched it before, and while I thought it was a good film I didn't find it to be a particularly interesting film. It's one of those ones that I watched, went 'Yeah, I can see why this is critically lauded', but probably won't ever bother to watch again. See also Se7en, Fight Club and a couple of others.

Mal: Define interesting...

It is an all-time fave of mine. As with you I like the mood, the story etc. I can see why it failed at the cinema though - it is not for a broad audience since the pace is a bit slow in order to let you suck in the characters and the environment. I read the (unofficial) sequel book as well and it was surprisingly good.

Dr Sadako

This is a classic movie that shaped all sci-fi movies and have shaped the cyberpunk culture in huge way. The 5 disc (BD and DVD) is a great buy and well recommended.

I'd argue that movies are a matter of personal opinion. What's great for one person is rubbish for someone else. It's totally subjective.

Except Bladerunner. That's a masterpiece whether you like it or not. It's not a matter of opinion it's a certifiable fact. If you don't like it then you're just weird.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Bladerunner is an awsome film and an all time classic. i have had it in my collection for many years and watched it many times and probably watch it  several times again.

Thulsa Doom

Someone explain why Blade Runner is deemed such a masterpiece?

It's well adirected, acted etc but what else?

It's a great film but then again so is Alien (and likely a few more that I can't think of right now)

Because everything wasn't shiny and new, because the protagonist is a loser, because it rained all the time, and because of Vangelis's soundtrack.  IMO.

Even I like it, and I don't like films...

I think it is seen as a classic as it broke new ground for films at the time.  People tend to forget that this film is almost 30 years old and was hugely different and 'new' compared to the released films of the day.

To remind people of the context within which Bladerunner should be considered here's a list of the top 20 revenue earning films from 1982, the year in which Bladerunner was released.  Put Bladerunner into the context of the below list and you get an idea why a writer of Dicks's skill, a (to be) legendary director and a talented cast managed to put together a classic.

1 E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Univ.)**
2 Tootsie (Colu.)
3 Rocky III (MGM-UA)
4 Porky's (Fox)
5 An Officer and a Gentleman (Para.)
6 The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Univ.)
7 Star Trek II (Para.)
8 Poltergeist (MGM-UA)
9 Annie (Colu.)
10 48 HRS. (Para.)
11 The Verdict (Fox)
12 Firefox (WB)
13 Gandhi (Colu.)
14 The Toy (Colu.)
15 The Dark Crystal (Univ/AFD)
16 First Blood (Orion)
17 Conan the Barbarian (Univ.)
18 Best Friends (WB)
19 Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip (Colu.)
20 Tron (Disney)

...and then add Bladerunner.  For its era it was fantastic and still looks good and views well almost 30 years later.  That's testament to its quality.

Good point. And also an interesting year...
