Cooling - noise free and longer lasting?

I have a Coolermaster HAF 922 case (big) and the Intel OEM fan on the CPU has started to make noises like a dog humping an air-conditioner.

So, I need to replace the fan with something quieter and hopefully that'll last a bit longer. I'm fed up with having to turn the TV up to hear it over the fan.

I've been looking at two possibles. One is a pure fan cooling option - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 and the other is liquid cooler - Corsair Hydro Series H60 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler. One is £15 the other is £50.

Any thoughts on either of these, or better alternatives that cost less than £50?

It's for an Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz Socket 1366 CPU on an Asus P6X58D-E X58 motherboard.

I'm running the Corsair Hydro cooler on my i7 2600K, nice, quiet, all in one sealed unit so no topping up and works a treat. :D

big fan of the corsair hydro series, they are a big more pricy yeah, but they just run like a dream

I have the Freezer 7 Pro on my i7, CPU temperatures are kept low and it's very quiet indeed (even under heavy load).

Dead easy to install, but it is quite big - if your RAM DIMM's are too close to your CPU socket (or too big) you might have issues. Check the measurements before you buy.

It's a total bargain, I highly recommend it.

Get the H60 and swap out the fan on it for a better performing fun under static load and quieter solution.

You can even add a second fan to emulate the H80 for net to no extra cost in push pull for the cost of some screws with the correct thread and another fan.

The new Noctua NF-F12 is about to be released, with active noise cancelling:

Thanks for the feedback chaps. I think I'll go for the Hydro. I will wait until Mrs. Arithon gets over the shock that it was more than £5, then look for a quiet fan to go with.

I got an Antec Kuhler 920.......works like a dream and never going back.

Arithon,

grab one of the 1150RPM Scythe Gentle Typhoons for the H60. 2 if you can.

Best fans for radiators out there. I have a load of the 1450RPM versions cooling my radiators at 700RPM (fan controller) and they are silent. You can buy an 800RPM version I think, but it may not be powerful enough for the H60... I have a lot of radiator real-estate. The 1150s should be quiet enough though!

I got teh H80 adn some Nouctua NF12 but I found that running them I still get a winy buzzy sound I wrote to Noctua and said this something to do with the passage of the air hitting the rad and then hitting the fan.

The way I had it set up is like so

I got the noise and sent the email this is what the sent back this

Quote The phenomenon you've observed is due to the fact that
that the laminar flow at the intake of a fan is more prone to tonal
noises (observed as "whining") if objects are placed in close proximity
than the turbulent flow at the pressure side. Unfortunately, this will
always be the case, so all fans sound better if you use them in freeflow
situations or pushing air through a radiator rather than sucking air
through it from close proximity.

As you've observed, the best way to overcome such issues is to add more
spacing between the radiator and the fan and this is why many radiator
manufacturers off-set the fans by a few extra Millimetres. For radiators
that don't offer enough off-set, we recommend using shrouds like this
one to ensure the best acoustic experience:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/phobya-shroud-and-decoupling-120x120x7mm

Please keep in mind that you will need slightly longer screws to install
the fan with the shroud, but the Corsair radiators use standard UNC 6-32
threads, so it should be easy to get longer screws.

Alternatively, you could also drop the speed of the rear NF-F12 fan
using the Low-Noise Adaptor to make it quieter.

Now I got one and have installed it but it is still there so thinking of getting another one to do on the other side see if that makes a difference.  But all of this started watching this video and if you look they dont have the issue I have with thier set up.

So if anyone can figure out why and how there be a pint for you.  The noise test is about 9mins 30secs in.

Hope that helps Arithron

Hi Toby, you only got the sound when the cooler is mounted inside the case?

and what case do you have?

No mate I get the sound when it is no in the case as well, it the air passing though the Rad which seems to be the issue.  I have tried it with the fans pulling and pushing through.

Hmm then its not the case mesh causing it..
When you pump so much air through the radiator, your bound to get some sort of buzzy sound, tho never heard it on a level that should be that noticeable..
You sure its not a resonating sound your hearing.. With two fans that close, there could be a resonating issue..
Which could be caused by both fans running nearly exact same rpm's, causing a constant humming sound or
two fans far off in rpm's causing one fan to try and pull more air then the other can deliver..

Is the radiator with fans vibrating a lot?

If I have one fan attached it is slient as the dead, it when I bring the 2nd fan on the otherside of the rad that the noise happens.  All the bolts are done up but not so tight it will be a issue or so lose that they would virbate.

with two fans, you could be experiencing a spiral flow effect, when you got two fans so close, the air instead of getting pumped straight through the fans, the flow spirals a bit, and when hitting the straight fins of the radiator you get a windy effect. (tho not likely.)
Is it possible for you to turn one fan to half speed, if its resonation noise it would increase and the vibration would become louder.. If you got a good quality case, thats fairly stable, the screws should be tightened as much as possible, so the fan, radiator, fan would become one solid block attached to the case tightly.. (on a cheap case this would make tho whole case resonate..
or purchasing rubber studs instead of screws (tho the weight of radiator with fans might be a big much)
last possibility is to use rubber washers between fans, radiator and case, so they would absorb the noise.. (you can test it out with rubber bans as temp solution (they get brittle quite fast) mount them a bit like the shrouds you linked (i use it in my media center to make it ultra silent))

Ill be on TS in a bit if you got questions.
