The focus ring wont help if you have all of your tubes on or the camera at full magnification as you wont have enough throw to make a difference. Then you have you move yourself, or really your camera to get focus. This is super hard as the adjustments are normally tiny.

A top tip is to set it to manual focus on a single point like Smilo said and then work slowly in and out till you hear a bleep for the AF point to confirm then hit the shutter. OR if you have magic lantern to set the camera to auto take a shot when in focus using trap focus, that way as long as your shutter speed is high enough so you don't cause blur you can move in and out and the camera will auto take a shots when in focus. I have got many good photos like this in bright sunlight.
