More of a query really...whilst adding my ships to the DMW fleet I couldn't help noticing the ship name field well so far I haven't named any of my ships as I was waiting until the game went live but way back when I was thinking of a highly unoriginal 'Culture' style ship naming convention as I love the irreverence Iain Banks had for naming his spaceships but now I'm in DMW I wondered if this was going to be appropriate.

So is there going to be a DMW ship naming convention or can I just crack on with probably calling my Herald for example - VFP "Unreliable Information" or "Like Sh!t off a shovel" obviously depending on how many characters they let us use, I have some equally uninspiring and crass names lined up for other ships in my fleet but I'll toe the party line if needs be.

Currently there's no rules set. I tend not to name ships at all but as long as it's not obscene and doesn't break any rules CIG make then it's up to you. It might be nice to have some way to brand our ships with the dMw logo but until the mechanics for doing that sort of thing are in place we won't know exactly how we can mark our ships as part of the dMw fleet.

I'm remembering something about CR stating that we won't have a big name tag floating over our ships as we fly through space. Players will only learn about other players through ship scans. Also it will be possible on certain ships with certain equipment to obscure or fake your ship ID (probably for smugglers, covert operators etc.) Also I believe it will not be immediately obvious if a ship is a player or an NPC.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

CIG did mention an intended mechanic for decals or some kind of ship personalisation but I can't remember where I saw it.  Certainly we'll be doing a graphic once the option is available.

As for names, it's just as Smilo said.  If the graphic says DMW in some way then the naming is up to you within these limits!

Well in my opinion, you shouldn't use words that are blocked by profanity filters.

Something like "Like Sh!t off a shovel" will probably get you reported in game.  You'll be flagged and have to change it, or worse.  While the word use there isn't blocked, you are bypassing filters..

Really? They are gonna go all politically correct on everything? I really hope they don't go all "Blizzard" on the rules and ban people for the tiniest things. One of the refreshing things about EVE was that everything was allowed, as long as you stayed within the physical rules of the universe and didn't affect anything outside of it. IE stealing in-game currency being ok etc. While with Blizzards rules, you can just cry to the GMs about anything, and they will ban whoever hurt your feelings.

I'm sure I remember CiG saying that ships themselves will attain reputation (a la Millennium Falcon) so naming could become important at some point, and I wonder if we will have to register a name with some central agency for our ships and then maybe have to register a change in name under the same ID.

I'm guessing that naming will be optional, in which case, a scan will most likely reveal the unique ship ID itself - something like a URI, perhaps?  That alone should make people to want to name their ships.

smilodon

It will be ok only as long as I am able to kill without penalty over and over and over again ANYONE who names their ship The Millennium Fulcrum or calls themselves Luke Skywarker. They should be killed on site, in fact there should be rewards and free stuff just for blowing them up.

A man after my own heart - I've named my Mustang Beta "Beta Luck Next Time" (I plan to own many of them so I can have "Beta Late That Never". I will not stop in this regard) and an Avenger "Prey For Reign". I need to get another ship so I can call it Apex Creditor for no reason other than that I can and no one can stop me.

So I assume  if I create an alt character called 'Han Yolo', there might be some unfortunate friendly fire?

Well good to know there are some more Iain Banks fan's in DMW, I have quite a lot of ship names written down ready, hopefully I'll be able to fit most of them in and not too many profanities amongst them and those that have none of them I would consider too rude, but then I'm ex forces so I'm probably not the best judge of what's acceptable.

I know a bloke who used to serve on HMS Turbulent, (looks like the ******* offspring of Skeletor and David Bowie) so I can probably imagine what you might refer to. Still, as I was taught by the media manager at the agency I work for "easier to ask for forgiveness than permission"...
