at only 2.4ghz isn't this a bit outdated now?

Not necessarily.

The question is, what do you do on your WiFi?

Is it browsing, or is it gaming and network intensive stuff?

It's not about whether its out dated but if there is congestion. The 2.4GHz is heavily used in city areas but may be less overused in your area being in the country/ coastal area.

You can allocate 20 of 40Hz chunks per channel and increase performance as you have a wider chunk to transmit data over and also you have a bit more chance of finding a relatively clear chunk on the 5GHz range in crowded areas as it's less widely adopted. The trade off is less range for more performance, so you may need more access points to properly cover the area with the best signal strength.

The only real issue I've seen in my home which is an apartment with many neighbors is if I fail to properly separate my own Access Point channels, e.g. ground flr  should be 1, 1st flr 6/7 2nd flr 13 (or 14 if you have it as it's cheating as it's not a European standard so is generally clear).

I use 802.11n on the 2.4GHz range fine with this 3 AP config and get 100Mbps+ speed. No issues with Netflix or HD 1080p streaming, never tried 4K though but I don't have a 4K TV.

Also not all your devices may support 5GHz or 802.11n so a b/g mix is a good general compromise if you don't need ultra high transfer rates.

This is all on £10 Cisco Linksys cheap routers and one is running a VPN to the US or UK.

Then a 2.4 GHz AP is more than adequate, and as a bonus you get more range.

You don't need 5GHz for non-bandwidth intensive usage.

Cisco 1142 LWAPP is both 2.4ghz and 5ghz and is a pretty good access point, i still got a few hundred running in my production enviroment.
