Hi Albert, I've been looking into getting one also.
There's a few sites in the NL that have like starterkits, have a look here: https://www.sossolutions.nl/raspberry-pi/starter-beginner-setjes for set ups like these: https://www.sossolutions.nl/raspberry-pi-3b-quad-core-retro-console-emulator
I still have to ask Toby or OB what the best set up would be as I'm interested also

Hey Duv,

I had a chat with Toby on TS last night. The base things needed are a Pi3 B with a little box, heat sinks or fans are useful if as gaming is heavy on such a device. A power supply. Then better than microSD is a USB stick with 128GB of storage. That runs faster thsn microSD and you get more storage for your money. This is the minimal requirement.

Add cables like HDMI if you don't have a spare, controllers if you need one or 2, etc.

The biggest decision I see is which case to get. There are dozens of choices, some basic and cheap, up to others that are a block of aluminium and cost more than the Pi itself.

I am thinking that an open case with a fan to remove the heat from the heat sinks is a decent idea.
Cheers, Bert

Keep me posted, I'm also definatly interested in getting 1 but my computer skills are non-existent in comparison to yours.
Toby thought I'd manage though.

I have one to and done a lot to it already but yes agree that running RetroArch is complicated and getting the controllers mapped properly especially for N64 roms is a bit of a challenge.

Anyone tried over clocking them yet to see how high an emulator it will run well?

General consensus is you can get a 1.35GHz o/c out of a model B easily with either an aluminium case or an open case with heat sinks and a fan.
