Just to update.. I found a £3 copy of windows that works like a charm. I believe these sellers used the free upgrade period to snag loads of copies of windows on basically defunct hardware that they are now selling for small profits (small in single doses.. probably a lot of money to be made en masse!)
All our Gods have abandoned us.
