hi guys...

Just after some of ure expertise....

im looking towards the new year and a  new deal for our clan server...   jolt runs out on 15th jan.. and kz any day now...

i reakon we would have about £50-55 per month to spend and would really like your views on what we would be best doing...

i'd prefer a dedicated box,  are there any companies you now of that allow us to rent a box and rack space..  even if its slightly over our budget...

Another option open to us.. is Teeny Warrior has a HP netserver l200  or something like that..  which should be able to runa  few game servers from.. but its a big box ..

or rebuild my compaq desktop pc (p4 1800 512) and stick it in a co-hosting company..(atm its sat in a company in maindedhead.. but pings are generally about 10-15ms higher than london)..

any views suggestions would be great..

chrs Neth...

ps look forward to dec 27th...

We colo our hardware at the moment and find that this is the best solution and generally cheaper than renting an equivalent spec dedicated server.  The biggest problem with getting your server into a colo rack is the cost of the rackspace.  It's generally £15/U per month (unless you're in somewhere like Redbus where it is up to double that cost) plus your bandwidth costs.

There are loads of companies out their who will rent a dedicated server to you.  However as we don't rent our hardware it is difficult to say who is best or what they charge.

For my 2 cents I would try to buy your hardware and then just cover the colo costs.  it should work out better value imo.

We custom built our current server and put into it a P4 2.8GHz and 1GB DDR RAM on an Epox mobo.  This set up comfortably ran our website, forums, 3 CS servers, 2 CZ server and SMTP for our @deadmen email addies.   We housed it in a 2U box that we selected from an online retailer.  HTH.

We'll be looking to move to a 64-bit solution at the next upgrade.
