I thought I would hijack this thread rather than start a new one.

I've a bit of time available to sort out the map rotations at last. That and the fact that we have settled down with CZ now. I'm looking for a bit of feedback here before I post anything in the general forum. At the moment we have a different rotation on the public server than on the two passworded servers.

It occurs to me that it might be an idea to run the public and one passworded server as mirror images of each other. Moving between the two would be easier.  The third passworded server could carry the favorite maps and also be a testbed for any new maps we might want to introduce. So Razer and say Homer would both have the same rotation (Homers) Meathook would have a core of real favorites (Aztec, Inferno,  dust2, office etc) plus a handful of new maps (stadium, downed, vostok)

This allows people to play the public server without needing to download new maps everytime we introduce one. Movement to the TCS passworded server would be easy as it would have an identical rotation. Any testing, trialing etc of new stuff would be kept apart and people would make a point of downloading the maps only if they wanted to try them out.

I can see flaws in this idea as it might also be an idea to load new maps to the public server and generate some interest there, while keeping the two private servers loaded with good solid TCS maps. The public server would in effect become the test server where we could throw new maps (basically as it is now)

Any stunning ideas?

The big problem is that whether we list the mapcycle or not people will just join and expect to be able to play.

As was discussed elsewher in the admin forum can we please stick to standard map cycles until the download issue is fixed. Then I'll happily fill my boots with new maps but at present it hurts us more because people get pissed off and drop from the server if they don't have the map.

I agree. Some of the maps have been on the cs rotation but not on the cz, which causes trouble. Add to that changing to completely new maps that have not at all being in the rotation.  <_<

Which is why I'm inclined towards a more or less fixed standard rotation on Razer and one password protected server, leaving the other password protected server free for us to try out different maps on.

I assume we're on hold till the download problem is fixed.

However I'd like an opinion on whether we mirror a map rotation on a public and private server and load non standard maps onto the second password protected server

or have a simple map rotation on the public and mirror a larger map rotation on the two private servers. My concern is that the additional maps on the private servers might cause problems for new people who are moving from the public to the private (as in they won't have the new maps when we all decamp to the private).

How long exactly do we thing a map download will take (did take) before the problems?

A couple of minutes max before probs
6 to 10 minutes currently

Hopefully the new firewall which we will have much greater control over will help this as we should be able to set it up fairly quickly and easily.  Watch this space.

then I guess we can run whatever we like on any server if it's only going to be a couple of minutes  :)
