nethany

hi guys.. hope ure all doing well.

ill just copy and paste what ive posted on BoD, duvel thinks some of you may be able to help.

ok guys just a quick one, i want some feedback to try and solve badaims ping issues.

Badaim's ping to cs server (not just bod's) is avg. around the 50-60 mark.. but wots more surprising is that he ahs a 2mb aol connection(please no flaming about aol),

i did some test with him yesterday and the only thing i could see wrong with his setup is that when he runs a tracert to any ip on the net his first HOP/POP is taking more and 30ms..(sometimes 70ms) to me thats just crazy.. and then it only takes him another 6-8ms to get to his target server.

any of you guys got any ideas.. weve had a look at his pc and all looks fine.. ie no spyware etc. hes using a usb modem(i used one before i got a rounter and i didnt take that long).

please post in here.. especially if u work for a isp or have experience in this sort of subject..

many thanks

Neth..

After a conversation with Nethany on MSN:
1)i did a few with him and its was crazy.. first hop ms was anywhere between 30 and 90 at times.. but never below 30

2)only thing i can think off is it could be his telephone cable quality from his house to the exchange or AOL routing him to a far away authentication server

3)tracert is good to c if ure having network issues along the internet, but his problem is just crazy / its only bad hitting that first hop.. ie from his house to the exchange.. and he says the exchange is just up the road from him

4)had him talking to aol yesterday afternoon and they said they couldnt do anything !!!

I've never quite been certain of tracerts but I'd take a guess at two possible solutions:

1 - try a different modem (borrow a known-good one from a friend if possible) just in case

2 - send your tracerts to AOL and/or BT and register a complaint or three. Lack of a decent ping where people who live near you are getting good pings could be grounds for being allowed out of a contract so he can get a better ISP?

and for comparison...

his phone is through BT? or do AOL do the whole package these days? I rty to avoid knowing anything about them :) if it's BT then he should also log a complaint with BT as they do have engineers who sometimes get sent out to fix problems... I've had various ISPs over the years and my ping has varied quite a bit, but the worst I ever got was 30-60 and that was because I was running my flat through an XP server/gateway. As soon as I removed the server pc from the link my ping dropped to 25-30. When on bulldog dsl last year I had a consistent 20-odd ping in the uk, telewest has always been nearer 30.

Do try a different modem though, "usb modem" is a pretty vague description!

i believe he has the standard aol setup/package with a usb modem and using a bt phone line..

he phoned AOL yesterday and they said they coudnt explain why he was getting these pings and said there was nothing more they could do.  I asked badaim to contact BT, but again they said they could offer no assistance.. (although i think they are sending him out a replacement usb modem)

lastly i asked Badaim to conatct AOl again and ask them to pass a support ticket to BT to get the line checked out, but they refused !! (i know they can do this as i have asked for it before without any issues).

If he has a problem with his broadband, which it appears he might, then he needs to not take no for an answer.

Call AOL, tell them that he has this issue, if they say they can't do anything, speak to a manager. Ask them what their SLAs for issues are and when he can expect it to be reolved. If they still refuse, kill the contract with a nicely worded letter as they aren't upholding their side. (There are better versed people than me here for this)

BT will blame AOL, AOL will blame BT. The contract is AOL as I would see it, push them.

It also looks like they are proxying your connections - the first three hops - ask them if you can bypass it as it is giving you a performance issue. They'll say no, but the fact you mention it may get you past Joe Average on the helpdesk.

Oh and get a direct number, and a name everytime you call, ring back twice a day, quote the reference and names, be a pain in the ass.

+ it's all being added by the first hop, lookin gat the 1 trace we have. Blame the hardware.

if possible, see if he can borrow an adsl router and try that. USB adsl devices will add unnecessary latency to the connection. Ditch it :P routers are very cheap now.

Me and Doris share a 1meg AOL connection and we get a better ping than Badaim.

His ping earlier up th elist shows 29ms for the first hop then only 10 ms for the remaining 8 or so hops to the server. That says to be that the contention in his neighborhood is high and there amy be nothing he can do about that as BT managed the DSLAM boxes that we all connect to and then router our various ISPs off the BT POP I believe. Unless your exchange is unbundled and you go through another ISP who has moved in.

Routers are better I agree with the lads on that one for sure.
Cheers, Bert

nethany

thanks guys.. i beilve Badaim is switching to another isp..

Get a adsl router with a built in modem, belkin are a great brand and have a freephone number plus lifetime warranty so he could ask their help too.
