Technology Section / Steam and WinXP user privileges
August 06, 2007, 09:35:32 PM
.blob errors would crash steam.exe and I only have trouble with actually launching a game with Steam, i.e. running hl.exe. Not that I haven't tried just in case..

For now, I'm just using "run as..", but it's not really ideal, for obvious reasons.

Technology Section / Steam and WinXP user privileges
August 06, 2007, 12:10:50 PM
For several years, I have happily used Steam under a restricted user account in WinXP. After installing under admin privileges, I simply added my user account in the security settings for the Steam tree and everything worked perfectly; adding games, updating Steam, launching apps etc.

Yesterday, I rebuilt my system and suddenly I can't get it to work. To the best of my knowledge, I didn't do anything different and the Steam support forums suggest this is the proper way, not that they are very helpful on the subject. Google gave no extra clues.

Obviously, I'm overlooking something here. I can still update Steam and install games as a restricted user, but hl.exe crashes to desktop on launch after a short glimpse of the title screen, no error message. It's not drivers or firewall settings, running as admin works just fine.

Suggestions, anyone? It would help with a crash report, but I can't seem to find one.

If you haven't played this great hl-mod already, this friday is release day for the latest version. NS 3.2 introduces some changes in gameplay to make it both more inviting for the new player as well as providing the most balanced version yet. More info at http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/

Quote from: Penfold;175147I bought it so I could see, for example, a whole A4 page in Quark or Word etc but it's no 'taller' than my 19".
For this, you want a monitor that can be tilted on the side and change the desktop orientation in the graphics settings. I use this on a near daily basis. Very nifty!

You can never go wrong with Civilization. Seriously. Any edition will do, and they even ported it to several portable devices.

Another good old HL-mod is Natural Selection. Half FPS, half RTS, double the fun! Currently in beta-testing towards 3.2 and with NS2 on Source in the works.

You can also get some serious pancakes (pannekoeken) with strange toppings and fillings. Almost like a pizza, but with pancake! Strange as it sounds, bacon does go with syrup.

Counter-Strike: Source / Axia down?

I think they had server management/funding issues. Also there were some public disagreements between an admin and the owner on their forums a while back.

Sad to see them close, though. :(

96%, this test is obviously flawed. Score is calculated relative to the total number of tests, so without knowing the number of entrants this test is at best very unsure and at worst plain bad statistics. It would take little effort to rig a script to raise the overall score of what would be considered "normal" answers.

When I started playing CS I had never tried another FPS before, thus the name 'cannon fodder' seemed appropriate. Then when I stumbled onto N42, and later found my way here, I realised that there already was a player by that name (whatever happend to him, btw?).

I thought about it for a bit and figured I might as well go with the first murderer in history, hoping some of the talent might rub off. Gen 4:15 also was reassuring in keeping me alive a bit longer, but that dont seem to work... Divine intervention isn't what it used to be. :(

Ok, seriously. We all knew there was something fishy about otherwise intelligent people pretending to be fairies, but now we have proof.
