Christ if that's your idea of a good night, drive down here, and wake my missus up at midnight. I guarantee you'll foolw through. She scares me during the day...whilst I'm at work...behind a security door...with bodyguards.

Bloke at work says this is ok, he's gonna lend me it, I'll let you know.

Well, that's not true, I'm gonna tell you it's great even if it's crap, so I know that someone else will waste their time too.

Ok, got it, installed it, got all prepared, even turned the lights down and the volume up.

So...it's an FPS, and sadly, it's good.

After a boringly long intro which sets the scene you're in. A little slow to start but some good atmosphere. Rats running behind bins have you turning and feeling rather edgy.

Into the action proper and it has bullet time, no biggy nowadays but still enjoyable, the plus side being it's relatively short so you can't just MaxPayne your way through the harder bits.

As a million reviewers have said, Doom3, monsters hide in cupboards until you pass then appear behind you. Crafty buggers, hiding there...that doesn't happen in FEAR.

The AI is good, the flank, retreat, get into cover, some good challenges.

The twist is the Psych Ops, you get passages where you see things, like the bird in the Jap scare movies.

I''ve been to the pub since starting this so I'm oging to stop now. I'd say try it. In my list I'd put it in and around HL2 and Far Cry, possibly better as it is different to HL2, but then I thought that was crap anyway.

Bought it, played it through, sold it on ebay.

I quite liked it. My favourite would be Hlaf-Life 2, though. And Doom.

However, I would like to recommend Riddick Escape from Butchers Bay! Very good atmosphere!

Personally I think FEAR was way better than Doom 3, and Quake 4, but not as good as HL2. Each to their own :-) The startup is very atmospheric and scary, and great. Then you get to an office complex. For the middle third of the game in this office complex it's pretty much a straight action FPS. No really scary moments, just ones that make you jump (not the same thing), and only average atmosphere, but still solid combat. Then for the final third of the game the atmosphere and scaryness ramps up again and it's well worth the cash. It's not that the middle bit wasn't *fun*, I just think they could have done with cutting it down to an hour or so of gameplay instead of about 4 to 6 (i'm not actually sure how long I spent there).

As people have said already though, it is a bit of a system hog. I've not sold it on becuase I think it'll be one of those games I feel like pulling out and playing through every year or so, like Deus Ex 1 (mainly for the atmosphere. FEAR is nowhere near the calibre of game that Deus Ex was).

Mal: Define interesting...

Im still trying to find an FPS that catches my attention for more than the first few levels. They all seem the same.

Level 1. Shoot at the lone bad guys with a pistol, half way through pick up SMG, use it straight away against multiple foes.

Level 2. Mow down Multiple foes with new SMG pretty much the whole level, switch to pistol after being too trigger happy.

Level 3. Get another weapon. slightly more baddies on this level with the introduction of one bigger/harder/meaner baddie near the end.

Level 4. Multiple Bigger/harder/meaner baddies, same amount of minions. ooh, a bit where i get lots of ammo, armour and a new gun. End of level Boss, use new weapon.

 <_<

HL2 did a good job trying to mix it up. ride around in the buggy, move things with the grav gun, erm, shoot guys with your new gun, more people to shoot..newer gun ....etc.

Another thing the AI is always predictable. No matter how you want to dress it up (ooh they retreat and wait and STUFF) they are going to do the same thing in the same situation everytime.

The only game that i've played more than once is MaxPayne2, just for the story telling and artwork.
