I am a long time 'Ghost Recon' fan (...a game I think is very much in line with the dMw attitude as it is very tactical and promotes a high degree of teamplay)...

So I am getting very excited about the forecoming release of the latest version - 3: Advanced Warefighter - which should be out in the first quarter of 2006.

There has been much worry that this new PC tactical FPS will just turn out to be a ported version of a game made for the X-Box 360...But I am glad to say that a recent developers live chat firmly says different: Ghost Recon 3: Advanced Warfighter

Some nice details about play and graphic detail, and I really think this will be worth looking into if you like a good tactical game (rather than a running round frag-fest)...

The best thing about the GR series - which BF2 sadly lacks - is a co-operative play mode, where you can join other live players in a team game against the AI teams in missions. This tests your tactical expertise.

As you can tell, I am a big fan ~ but I realize GR is NOT a BF2, the pace can sometimes be as frantic, but generally it places more emphasis on co-operation in a team sense than adversarial gladitorial fire-fighting that BF2 does.

(In this game ~ once you are dead YOU ARE DEAD! No quick respawns - unless you set it up for this in the server options. This promotes a more REALISTIC pace of thoughtful play where you don't tend to run round taking stupid and reckless chances!)

For example, on missions individual players may be expected to carry out specific tactical roles in order to successfully complete a mission ~ like explosives specialist. ANd if these specialists get killed the mission fails ~ so you have to be prepared to only move as fast as your slowest player in order to keep everyone together and/or to protect your key specialist.

I know some of you who would relish this sort of team work ~ but others who might find this a bit 'slow' or too inflexible...

Still will keep you up to date on this game as I think it will be a winner.

I'm probably going to be of the "relish" variety  :norty:

One of the GR3 features that has come to light that is interesting in light of BF2 is the NO JUMPING feature...

Basically the games normal player animation handles climbing over low obstructions (like walls) ~ but you CANNOT JUMP!

Fantastic...Absolutely NO bunny hopping/dolphin diving...At all...EVER...FULL STOP!

:)

I doubt if [CoD] will be among those clans that will relish GR3!

;)

Oh don't ask Maus!

LMAO...

GR2 for the PC was an absolute fiasco.

They went as far as actually advertising it's release (I had my copy reserved on Play.com) then at the very last minute they binned it!

Trouble is they simply ported the CONSOLE version of this over to make a PC game! (Whereas the norm is the other way about.)

This would have been a complete disaster as the console version was no way as detailed or complex as a proper PC version would be.

It was all a big let down because it means we PC GR fans have had to wait neigh on five years to get a proper update of the game (which is why people are still playing GR 1 on the PC and Mac ~ luckily there have been lots of mods and conversions to keep us happy!).

Interesting additional news:

Ghost Recon 3 will have some kind of RANKING system!

Quote from www.1up.com:

"1UP: How will the ranking system work?

CA: There's an all-new ranking system for GRAW. It's been totally re-designed with no reference to the GR2 system. Based on player feedback, a lot of people found it confusing [in GR2]. The ranks are real military ranks, however it is based on the country you set. For example, if you identify yourself as a British player, the rank insignia will change based on the country. You can choose American, Canadian, British, French, German, and Italian. Not only is it a simple change, it's part of your player identity. On the leaderboards when you play ranked matches it will have the country flag next to your name, which will possibly foster a bit of country competition."

So this *should* - if I understand this properly - be even better than the BF2 system (which is American-centric).

Top notch!

(Makes you wonder if they put off releaseing GR3 - which was originally supposed to be coming out at the end of THIS summer - because they were looking closely at what was and wasn't working with BF2????)

Nice screenies. Is there a final date?

Hippy

Rangers on commision.

I only played GR on xbox, didn't like the controls and sometimes the pace, same can be said for rainbow 6.

I do enjoy a bit of the old "oh s*** if i die thats it: we fail." It makes the game much more intense.

BlastUK

the best part is when you shoot people 20 times point blank they actually die!

usually only takes 1-2 shots :)

LOL...I wish!

The release date looks like being March next year (as I say, I suspect they are looking closely at BF2 so have delayed the release, ALSO they are heavily into the X-Box 360 launch.)

GR on a console is nothing like the 'real thing' ~ but that's my view about tactical FPS generally...I just can't play them on a console controller!

ONE EXTRA FEATURE that might interest you guys to is that they are apparently getting rid of teh 'class' sytem that GR1 and BF2 use, where you choose a class and are stuck with the weapons load-out that they specify...

Basically now each soldier has three 'slots' - you fill these slots with the weapons you want. You have a primary slot, secondary slot and a back pack...Sounds cool.

Hippy

Bit like CZ, althought you only have 2 slots for guns, and space for 1 smoke nade, 1 HE and 2 flashes.

May have to look into this, as i did like to play co-operative Rainbow 6 with Doris on the XBox.

Ranger

I'll keep folks up-to-date with this* - but I recon it will be a winner with the dMw guys...

To the point where I think we may end up with this on a server and a special 'Ghost Recon' section in the forum...(IMHO)

There's no doubt in my mind that this is the best military tactical shooter for people who like to *think* about their games...

I will still play BF2 a lot - but will be split betwen this and Ghost recon 3.

I only hope it lives up to the hype and they don't do a BF2 and release too early before it has been properly tested.

*NEW INFO: BODY AWARNESS FIRST PERSON VIEW (sounds interesting):

Quote"Body awareness helps to feel more a part of your surrounding, being immersed and not just a floating camera. In fact it is an improved FPS view that lets you see your own body and equipment. This gives you better situational awareness and makes your moves more precise. It allows you to see which parts of your body, that you thought were protected by the environment, are in fact exposed to enemy fire. Just like in real life. While implementing body awareness into mechanics such as the rope insertion from the Blackhawk helicopter plays on the use of emotion, immersing you in the feeling of tension and fear when leaving the perceived safety of the Blackhawk and entering a hot combat zone.

On top of that we implemented special moves such as sliding or diving that will allow you to reach a cover point more quickly for instance. Those moves, including the leaning system, will also be useful to survey the environment from your cover point, to locate and suppress the enemy threat in a blink."

Hhhhhmmmmm - sounds good!

Interesting fact: The CEO of the GR3 developers used to be in the Swedish Special Forces - so these guys know a thing or two about real tactical infantry warefare!

Just keeping the info coming in....

We are starting to get some news about the storyline for GR3:

"Stolen US Military surveillance hardware has fallen into the hands of Nicaraguan rebels.
They come to a deal over the device with Mexican paramilitary forces...
They must be stopped.
... A routine covert operation for the Ghosts...
in La Ciudad de Mexico.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city...
The Canadian Prime Minister and the Mexican and American Presidents gather to announce a new treaty: NAJSA, the North American Joint Security Agreement.
It’s the dawn of a new era in North American cooperation...
Except...
A rogue Mexican general has other ideas.
A coup!
The Canadian Prime Minister is killed.
The US President has disappeared.
Now it’s up to Captain Scott Mitchell and his
elite squad of Ghosts to bring him back ... alive."

Sounds inetersting!

Only thing that puts me off is that would we REALLY want to get the US President back??? LOL
