Maybe I didn't have the server up. I'll stick it on after 1800hrs GMT

If you are having trouble connecting to the server make sure that you do NOT, I repeat NOT, use the port number that DoorMan has so kindly provided. It is a dyslexic version of the correct one. Just use the default port instead  :P
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

I regularly use Vent with 40 people on it, it works really well and is very clear.

Is that a rented server or a *cough* engineered server?

Q: Sometimes I broadcast "static".

Research has shown this problem to be either directly caused by XP or a combination of the OS and sound card drivers. Some machines are also prone to generating static when the server is configured to use a 22Khz sample rate vs. the default 11Khz. But even then not everyone will have this problem.

Static also tends to be induced on XP systems if you have more then one program monitoring the same sound card's input device (i.e. using in-game voice comms while using Ventrilo) or if another program in the background tries to manipulate the same sound card's mixer and controls.

There is also a bind feature called "Reset sound input device" which can be used to stop static until the next time it happens. However, you might need to reset it several times to make it actually stop. There will be a 3 second delay after you press the bind and before you can start transmitting again.

Please be advised that the Static and Robotic problems are not caused by Ventrilo. They are either OS or sound card driver related.

    1) Try using a USB based microphone.
    2) Enable any onboard sound and use it for your microphone input.
    3) In setup enable the "Use DirectSound for input device". This might help.

Thanks, I shall examine this carefully and then cock up any implementation.  At least I'm consistant!

Wow good post.

JamesB

Well we came to the conclusion that it had to be my system last night when I had the same issue with ventrilo as I had with TS.  I'm going to try to make sure I have the latest drivers for my sound card first, if that does not fix it I will try to run the mike from the on board sound.  Failing that I'll just have to mess with a reset button for the sound system.  Will give it a whirl tonight if some of you chaps are around.

No thanks. I had a dig around and they vary from loadsamoney to about £63 a year for a 25 man server from Hurricane Host. Something we'll think about.

I think we'd all agree that the trial has been a success - even JamesB ;)

So check this thread for details of the official dMW Ventrilo Server.

Many thanks to Doorman for providing the trial server. Much appreciated.

Thanks all, yes it seems much better and even if I can't stop my machine broadcasting static after circuit changes at least in this I can map a button to reset the sound controller and restore tranquility to your eardrums.
