Nice points you make Mr T and Mr B. I don't eat meat but that has more to do with my ongoing attempts to bed my vegan girlfriend on something resembling a regular basis than it has to do with any strong held beliefs. I guess I just take comfort in acknowledging and embracing my own special form of hypocracy. And by acknowledging it I wonder if I don't exorcise it too?

Butchering Dolphins is wrong, but apart from the simple, easy and painless task of clicking a few buttons and signing an electronic petition, I will do nothing much about it. And likewise I will do nothing much about the brutality shown towards cows, chickens pigs etc in this country. I care about none of them enough to do anything substantial that might ease their plight. And for that maybe I am not a hypocrite at all, just heartless?

Another point of view that got to my mind earlier today concerning this case:

At least these people kills the animals to get food. I don't say that the methods they use are in any way acceptable, but it does at least have a kind of valid reason.

If you compare it to for instance the Spanish bull fighting, here is a short description I found on a web site:

So what happens during a bullfight?:
Firstly the bull is let into the ring. Then, the top bullfighter called the Matador, watches his chief assistant wave a bright yellow and magenta cape in front of the bull to make it charge. He watches this in order to determine the bull's qualities and mood, before taking over himself.

Then a trumpet is sounded and several fighters called Picadores weaken the bull by placing spears into it. This takes around 10 minutes.

Another trumpet is sounded and the Matador now removes his black winged hat and dedicates the death of the bull to the president or the crowd before beginning his faena.

Here they torture and torment an animal, and that only for plain entertainment. And still we feel more sorry for the dolphins than the bull...

Agreed Bob, but I would rather swim with Dolphins than run with Bulls!!
 
The difference is that the Dolphins are snared and have their throats cut and die in agonising pain.........the bulls are dispatched in a (professional)manner with the matador knowing where to place the sword to kill the animal outright.
 
Also, intelligence levels come into play, dolphins are known to be highly intelligent, and therefore it is far easier to empathise, as you could imagine it was you having your throat cut and being left to die in agony.
 
Short of attempting to bed a Vegetarian every night, I can think of no more horrendous a death, unless you could enlighten us?.

Well the bull has to get exausted before the Matador goes in for the final blow. The bull is getting speared multiple times before the Matador enters. So it isn't really a quick and painless death.
