Chaps,

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=74505

This is a mod for the forum that allows the attaching of files to posts in the forum.

It could be very useful (assuming that someone's prepared to install it and it doesn't fall foul of bandwidth considerations).

I can see that this would be really useful, but my knee jerk reaction would be that we ought to try where possible to keep files etc off the forum so that we limit the impact on crosswired's bandwidth use.  Stick a url in the post is still the lowest bandwidth overhead option.

What are your thoughts Stryker/DM?

I think oldies recommended plugin only provides a link to the file.  the file of course would be within the forum folders on blackadder somewhere.  So the file is only downloaded when someone wants it.

Bandwidth usage would only go up if it were suddenly used as a major dumping ground for the swapping of files etc. so we would have to police it and lay down the rules IE only CS related files.  The deadmen peeps could also use it on the occasions when they've needed to pass a file or two but only within the private dmw chat forum so the vast unwashed cannot see them breaking the rules :-)

PS crosswired is allways growing.  Black adders current bandwidth usage would of been crippling this time 12 months ago.... now were 10 times bigger :-)  so long the file mod does not double bandwidth used over night I'm not gonna worry too much.  Of course that is bandwidth that could of been used on a growingly popular cs server so it would need keeping an eye on it.

Ah, OK that's my misunderstanding then!  In which case, install away!  But I do like the idea of keeping the person to person transfers within dmw.....

My understanding of how the MOD works is that, like the forum itself, the thing is totally configurable with permissions and the like being set by forum admins.

The installation is not a five minute job and a lot of files need to be amended. As such it needs someone with about an hour to spare to set it up.

No by all means keep worrying TL :-)  Its a wonderful thing we have here with the server and all which could all be ruined by a black-adder being used as a warez server for a day!
