Activision has now confirmed the rumours that a new Call of Duty game is in the works over at Infinity Ward.

The existence of a new Call of Duty game isn't exactly surprising, but we're glad to see that it is Infinity Ward who'll be developing the title and not Treyarch who has been responsible for the series' less-good console titles.

What is surprising though is the suffix to the game's name; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare isn't just a name and Activision is set to confirm that the action will take place in a modern setting rather than the World War II battlefields with which the game has become synonymous.

Rumours now suggest that the game will allow the player to serve with the US Army, US Marine Corps. and the British SAS in a battle against Middle Eastern terrorists.

Stereotype shattering stuff then.

Activision plans to unveil more concrete details, including platforms and gameplay tidbits, over the weekend in the US. A trailer is set to air during the NFL Draft on ESPN on Saturday, while international fans will probably be watching it on YouTube soon afterwards.

Looking forward to the series' new fictional setting, or wishing they'd tried World War I instead? Drop by the forums and let us know your thoughts.

I don't recall pc getting no.3 although it was released on console game systems. I love the call of duty series although the first was much better than the second imho.

As a species we\'re fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up ways to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?

CoD: BF2 then?

WWI FPS would be a little limited, wander around in mud getting arty, MG and gassed, or shot by your own MPs. And the maps wouldn't be very very deep, a few yards or so.
