Locating by sound

Go and play cs:cz or cs 1.6 for a while and then you will learn that the sounds in cs:s are crap and that you don't need to trust all you hear compared to the sounds in the other versions.

With my setup I am able to locate people just as easily with Source as I can on CZ.

Sound is much better in cs:s than in CZ. Why? Because 5.1 actually IS 5.1 in cs:s. Turn on EAX and you will definitely know the difference.
 
Also if you use a real sound card instead of a onboard soundcard you will hear much difference between CS:S and CZ, CS:S being the better.

I agree that the sound in CS:S is better than in 1.6 but the ambient sounds on maps like Nuke and Train are just bleeping anoying

My configuration consists of digital sound via a 5.1 Cambridge sound works speaker system with creative sound card, and use only the mic from my head set for coms, I need one of those DJ type head sets tbh!

Since using digital sound, it is alot more clearer and focused in which i take full advantage of. :narnar:

Even with my Suttle Soundcard I can hear quit a difference now-a-days that CSS is better with the sound (after bettering the VC part also).
The other day on a map someone asked me how I could hear people walk on the other side of a wall and how I knew they were coming. I've just tweaked it a bit with all my soundsettings.

sound is very useful in many different situations:
you can hear when someone plants a bomb, or when a ct defuse it (then you jump out of your hideout and suprise him:taz: ).
from the sound of the shots, you can find out which weapon the other one have and with this knowledge you can adapt your tactics (for example, you just hear one impact close to you without a bang, you know its probably a scout, so you take cover and avoid long range combat if you only have a deagle or an mp...).
you can also count the shots. for instance someone has a deagle. when you hear him rapidly shooting his seven bullets, you know he must reload, so you can leave your hideout and play more offensive.
a player hears footsteps and he can value -espacially when there is water- how many players are on the way to him. then he is prepared or he can ask for help when necessary.
you can always balance the pros and cons; when you run, shoot, throw a grenade and so on, the sound that you make will give informations to the other team. but on the other hand, you can take players by suprise when you run, make them blind with a flashbang, and so on and so forth...
i think when you mind the different sounds in the game, the sound of the other players as well as the sound that you make, you will have advantages in many situations.
