Sounds like 1 job I had.
They had only 1 computer which had internetacces and which could only be used during breaks (over 30+ people working there). They wouldn't even allow music to be played on the workfloor.
 
@ My current job I can search the internet when I want aslong as my I'm doing my job properly. Heck, even the boss uses sites as Hyves and Facebook.

You know better than to start that "Windows is better than Unix" thing again, you never win and always end up stomping off.

 
I don't think anyone can really believe that Windows id better than UNIX in the datacenter, unless they've never had any proper exposure to UNIX.  I manage both Windows and UNIX servers and I can tell you that Windows doesn't hold a candle to UNIX in the availability and resilience stakes.
 
If your talking about the desktop and ease of use, Windows still comes out on top though (never used a MAC for any length of time so I can't compare).

We use to be blocked for anything that contained the word 'forum'  and any webmail client, so we used other methods to get to dMw. The proxy filters were just general blocks on words and you had to request access for business use. Blocking technical forums for sys admins was a bit of  pain.

But strangely it looks like someone with a bit of common sense got their hands on the proxy filters and made a better job of it, dMw is open and so are most sensible sites, strangely we even have access to YouTube.

Ocasionally you still get the 'denied' screens for certain links from within the forum, but we are pretty good now.

We use to have access to a completely open proxy that was used by our security teams, but that was remove a long while back. Although I can remember one guy that used to work for us that spent most of his time searching for soft pr0n pictures. :norty:

This change in policy is probably because of the more comprehensive auditing and software drop systems we use. The enterprise virus scanner has good malware and mail probes and so they feel safer letting you look around the web.

A bit of a change, they were using Ollivetti SX33's on OS/2 Warp when I started there and that was only 10 years ago. I was a contractor prior to that and ended up taking my own Pentium 200 Win98 laptop in to actually be able to do and work.

I'm not exaggerating when I say it used to take between 15-30 minutes to actually start up your PC and login in the morning. Sn00ks will back me up on that one.

Strangely, the practices we used to do 10 years ago ties in with Blunts ACAS hearing post. But the afore mentioned new software dropping and auditing system has stamped it out almost completely, some people still need prodding occasionally.

Make friends with the Sys Admin or buy him/her a bottle of whisky

You could use a proxy, but overuse and your IT guys might notice. Another option might be to remote desktop to your home PC, you can always change ports it runs on. Other then that ask them to unblock during lunch hours etc.

At my place of work, Ebay is blocked, except during lunch hours and after 5pm. Although all the IT team have access to everything.

For the rest, this thread made me think about another ex-boss of mine.
He allways got @ work around 9.30 and left around 17.00.
Got some comments from him that I allways left exactly on 16.30 but what he didn't knew is that I allways started earlier then everyone else.
He also commented on my internetusage once and even flipped when I used a site which I had to use for work.
Ahwell. Current boss is good and I'm working here allready 2 years now (used to be headhunted).

for music sites i have 220.ro a romenian youtube .
I just need to hear like 3 songs differ from the main crap radio they use in the lab ( you can't hear it where i work only if i work there).

And via via i can reach some songs on youtube, but i can't type or refresh in/with it but thats ok, i won't try to.

It scks i can't get on deadmen site, news sites and such are perfectly legal to watch, and i'm not gonna watch an hour, i have enough stuff to do, but a check in the New Post twice a day would be nice

Have the same thing only the opposite. I always show up later then the rest, but i also go home alot later, mostly its 30 min longer then required or so. but some people tend to forget that, just to nag about it or make "funny" (NOT) comments like, goodevening when i show up 30-40 min after then :S (and i've checked, they don't always check in @ 8 pm sharp themselves... (more like 10-20 min later))

i have the same problem - whenever i was on the internet at school i used to check the forums (maybe once a day or so) they blocked it for games.... Just thinking about reporting it as a "miscatagorisation" to Admin and get it unblocked
