There is one they use on those word-type programs which is floccinaucinihilipilification and is the longest non-technical word at 29 letters. There is also apparently a disease called
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis which is 45 letters.

as a kid we always used hottentotten as a base for our longest words, think mine was something like:
Hottentottententententoonstellingsbeveilingingsambtenarissen

but I just looked hottentotten up in wikipedia, seems one of the curently longest dutch word is:
hottentottensoldatenvrachtwagenreservewielventieldopjestentententoonstellingsterreinentoezichthoudersverenigingsgebouwenliftenonderhoudsmonteursgebruikershandleidingindexpaginanummertjes

but its still expending everyday :)

Wonder how many points that will get me with scrabble *ponders*

KISS - I like that one :flirty:

In Norwegian, "multi-word words" are written in one, and not split up - like e.g. in English. For instance, "bus passenger ticketing system" would correctly be written "busspassasjerbilletteringssystem" - and in that way, just your imagination limits the longest word :narnar:

So many of these longest words are in fact several words put together?

Antidisestablishmentarianism is 28 letters long and a genuine one which even Microsoft Word doesn't complain about!

For English, I guess the acid test is to check the word on //www.dictionary.com, that way you know it's a 'real' word.

in Danish the longest word, which is not just put together for the sake of being long but is in fact used, is the word

speciallægepraksisplanlægningsstabiliseringsperiode

basically meaning a planning and stabilisation period for a doctor's practice. That is only 51, so I guess we are crap at long words.

The longest row of consonants is in the word "angstskrig" (meaning screaming from anxiety) and it is only 8... and when I look at the other posts, we are way behind :)

An English, or American one, which I kinda hate is internationalisation at 20 chars. For some unexplainable reason I tend to get it right when spelling, but always have to check.

I think the longest finnish word is
atomiydinenergiareaktorigeneraattorilauhduttajaturbiiniratasvaihde and it's a used word. I also found one that is used but wery rarely Kumarreksituteskenteleentuvaisehollaismaisekkuudellisenneskenteluttelemattomammuuksissansakkaankopahan and the longer one is only some words put together.. First one is 66 letters and the second one 103
