Are the jumpers set to Master, Slave or Cable Select. I would try Master first and, if that doesn't work set it to CS.

Unfortunatly this is the only Laptop IDE drive I have

I am tempted to buy a new disk but if I can fix this disk (which I would love to do) I wouldnt need another disk.

Hence saving money in the credit crunch

go down to the local computer shop and buy a jumper, they cant cost a lot, else you could try to connect the two master pins with something else, tin foil or something, just be aware its must touch the rest of the pins
