Hi chaps,

Haven't been around as much as I'd like recently for various reasons, key of which is my PC is FUBARed.

1) Power it on, as soon as it gets to windows, I login, everything loads up and it freezes completely. Same thing in safe mode.

2) Reset (holding in power button) doesn't make it past the BIOS screen before locking up.

3) After this, resetting using the power button no longer works, and I have to switch it off at the wall.

Leaving it for a bit, and it goes back to stage (1).

This makes me think it's something due to overheating? Gonna try and get hold of an anti-static hoover and clear out the case, see if that helps, anyone else got any other suggestions?

There's no multiple beeps or anything at start up, it all seems to boot up fine until this random hang/lock.

Cheers

This really sounds like a dodgey Power supply to me.

are you saying you cannot enter the bios from the cold boot (1) either? If you can get the bios then the hardware monitor bit might expose anything that's overheating.

Other things might be hdd or ram. Have you got a liveCD lying around you can try?

Right rotating the case 75 degrees has fixed the problem, I think it was too close to the corner wall, obstructing airflow and overheating. Either than or some loose connection has dropped back in since rotating it.

Going to take the case off and clean all the gunk, fans, filters out and see what happens, does anyone know a good utility for monitoring temps of components?

Most motherboard/gfx card manufacturers have some temp monitoring software you can download from their website.  If you want something more detailed then there are plenty of fan controllers etc to which you attach analogue or digital temp sensors, or take readings from BIOS initiated monitoring.  I'd check the mobo/gfx card websites first.

Right it's happened again, and now the PC wont even turn on, so I'm guessing it's PSU. Any recommendations for a replacement?

Got this a couple of years ago because it was highly rated ... and still is.

My old PSU was 700W though, so thinking I should probably get something with the same power rating?

Maybe this one? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-032-OC

A few years ago I splashed out on an Enermax 1000w. been loving it ever since.

I recently picked up an OCZ 800w (I think) PSU from eBay for my spare rig..

I have one of those in my main rig, it powers the whole PC and the multiple fans, pumps and thingummyjigs needed to watercool the entire system.

I've had a few Enermax over the years and they have always done the job perfectly with excellent rail stability and load, even under some pretty heavy over-clocking.  Highly recommended.

Hmm, pricey! Reckon I'll take a punt on the OCZ, for the cost of the Enermax I can buy two OCZ ones! Right, this should be fun and games!
