Hi guys,

Firstly, thanks to you all for making this LAN a great success. By all accounts I missed a great one which is sad on one hand but great to know it's in capable hands.

Just wondering if there's anything to de-brief? How did the games comps/go ? Any problems with the server?

Ninja, perhaps you'd like to do the honours on posting up the LAN accounts to the Community funds section. As normal please thank everyone and those who brought and bought stuff at the auction etc.

I see that Suicidal paid for supporting member status so I'll update that. Anyone else or anything else of interest.

Can I please have a list of people who helped out so I can dish out the red badges?

Thanks

Benny

From my perspective.....

Arrived Thursday night, where an early birds group was already encamped. The room was set up and the evening in the bar was superb. Everyone's attitude and outlook was exceptional and there were no issues with setup. By the time I got up, Oldie was already doing his thing and as people arrived throughout the day I saw no issues and everyone got in and settled with no problems of note.

My only criticism is that I had to leave. For the whole 18 hours I was there there was not a single negative, and I'll do everything I can to be at the next for the entire meet.

If you want one thing to improve on....you could pre-cable to the desks with the right length ethernet cables, but I'm clutching at really short straws there.

Networking point of view ...... yeah yeah I know I know, but we seemed to be missing some of the Yellow Cat6 cables pro made ones.  Last time I set up we had enough to do all the links back to one switch and the uplink.  The room setup was slightly different this time but we are 2 down.

My suggestion is to get another 2 10m cable, and put them with the others in the switch box and label them up so that we have the network all containted in one box for easy of set up and take down.  Then bring the 2nd box with the other cables for spares.

There are also a few cables which need to be re terminated or got rid of.

Server was rock solid apart from L4d2 being built in such a unlan  friendly way that we had to host on 2 other machines but it all worked well.  And there was no way the server could of been changed to sort this out.

Comps ran well and at one point we were ahead of schedule.

The Projector with the racing laps went down really well, and I think this might become more part of the LAN.  I was speaking to OB about it and I will try and look into getting more stuff shown, the comps with a slight delay espcialy for the Finals.

But I think one thing for that to really take off is to get more of  grunt from the server, for example ideas brought up from discussion:

A very positive and funny LAN.

Despite my best efforts I was unable to resolve the issue of L4D2 being stuck in 4 player coop mode when using our dedicated LAN servers. Why Valve even have a LAN option for dedicated servers is beyond my understanding. It simply doesn't work. The only way to get a versus match at the LAN is if someone hosts it. Pathetic.

The other issue we had was around DHCP. Smilo and I spent ages trying to get his netbook to connect to the network but it wasn't getting an IP address. Then Sulky and Naldo turned up and had exactly the same issue. Now either we (and maybe any others on the network) had exhausted the DHCP range or the DHCP server suddenly went awol. We could do with ensuring that we have a known block of 50 addresses available to us in the room at all times and hopefully access to the router admin area (big ask tho that one). We managed to get around the issue by pinning the boxes to fixed IP addresses.

Only some minor issues with the internet going down twice. first time on friday afternoon, for like 10 min, and 2nd time on saterday night (midnight even) for 15 min.

For the rest anything went fine afask. Plus the projector was a big succes in my opinion, really added more dynamic to the whole LAN :)

Err what exactly did I do? :-) I only turned up for Friday - Saturday and didn't bring a PC. Granted I was wonderfully entertaining and witty but does that warrent a badge?
