I agree with him, Microsoft is trying to move towards a more closed system much like what Apple have with their operating system.

So, save some money & don't buy it.

Even if games start really supporting linux/etc there never gonna drop windows as no matter how many people switch to something else the majority of pcs will still be on a windows os.

I can understand why M$ are going for this actually.

A closed system for them will mean:
Less piracy for their own OS as software will have to come from more offical sources which will mean an activated copy.
Less piracy of software on their OS
Easier to support and fix issues with software on their OS as software on the market can be tested
Easier to update the OS without breaking functionality same reason as above
Less issues with viruses and spyware
More marketing info can be gathered about users

Personally, I don't have too much of an issue with M$ doing this as long as developers begin to cater for Linux users. My main problem with Linux as a gaming platform is actually a drivers which are very poor! WINE is pretty good these days, so older games will be supported too but if someone can get a DIRECTX port that works on everything it would be great.

As long as it's a level playing field where software developers can freely build software,  especially stuff that competes with Microsofts other software i.e. Office, Internet Explorer. My worry is that they're trying to build a closed system that favours their own substandard over better 3rd party stuff I'd rather run, Chrome, libre office etc. Down that road lies another anti competition lawsuit and more vast finest.

There is no pattern and with a lot of them the only thing holding them back is the drivers. Vista wasn't that poor but 12 months of having no drivers for anything killed it dead. Before windows 7 they did a consumer test renaming Vista to something else and claimed it was the next version of Windows and asked people to rate it and it got fairly positive reviews (Though I imagine they didn't ask them to try and install new components...that would be a different story).

It was exactly the same with Windows XP, I got a new computer at the same time as XP came out and there were no lan drivers included so I had no network etc etc. Burning CDs to get drivers across is unacceptable, I didn't format again until the service pack even when it slowed down. The difference was that almost immediately after launch products had drivers available, so if you had internet it could find the drivers. With Vista nothing had drivers.

Windows XP x64 was the exact same story, no drivers...I'm pretty sure there still aren't for most things. So also rubbish.

Windows 8 looks like it has many good features, but if it forces you to a closed environment it's going to be a bad idea. I like Windows for its simplicity (Linux hasn't matched that, not even Ubuntu - I can use it and even get Wine to work for many programs. But why when Windows just works?). If the new version doesn't "just work" then I've not reason to upgrade unless games demand it.

My point is there's no pattern. Windows Vista was killed by word of mouth before launch. It could be the same for this.

Win 98/SE (same OS) - good, Win 2K (not a consumer OS) WinME - dreadful, Win XP - good and got better, (Win XP 64 no one had 64 bit machines back then so it was never used), Vista - bad (Vista SP1 a bit less bad), Windows 7 - Great.

So there you go. By this foolproof and highly scientific principal Windows 8 will be rubbish until they add a service pack that allows users to disable the Metro UI, when it will become a bit less dreadful. Windows 9 will drop the Metro UI completely and Microsoft with then go into it's Orwellian mode, remove any reference to it from their web site and then deny Metro ever existed in the hope we'll forget it as well
