Quote from: AndyBee;387322Works great in AC, guessing best bet will be to go to Elite forums & nick someones VA profile for starters :)

Thats how I got mine, I think via Utube, and am modifying to my own keybinds.
Cant upload .vap file or html copy so send me PM with email address and I'll forward
it to you or anybody else who wants to 'nick' it  (Southerners call it plagiarism). :D

Can't you change the file extension and upload it to the forum?  Or Dropbox it and use  a Public link.

So in true reverse order of this topic, I invested in an Aurora LN in Star Citizen. I was drawn in by the flashy web site, the perfectly produced ad videos and the general enthusiasm of dMw friends.

First question: Does anyone know when Frontier began development of Elite and when Cloud Imperium started working on coding Star Citizen?

The reason I ask is I don't want to flame Star Citizen if it is a year behind Elite in programming hours but....

My first impression was, wow this is really rough, as in looks, responsiveness and movement. Sure the ship looks the same as the pictures in their store but the hangar looks terrible, graphical anomalies around the whole setting are annoying to the eye and I couldn't see what the attraction is of walking around a ship that allows you to enter it and jerk around whilst the game tries to accommodate a very (very) early first person view of a character. I mean the Aurora with a bed in the back room is woeful, what do I as a space sim pilot care about a bed, will I have to enter it like minecraft to move time to the next day cycle, I think (hope) not.

Arena Commander. I have to be a bit more tolerant here with my feedback, it's early development and I was using a mouse and keyboard. It actually worked ok, yes the redout and blackout issue was weird but not unexpected, but the general lack of control was hellish in terms of playability. Shockingly, the ship physics were utterly terrible. It was like playing a laggy game in a web browser.

BUT... what really surprised me was how good Elite looks after experiencing Star Citizen. The marketing material of Star Citizen suggests a level of visual superiority that Elite players would drool at and love to see in their game. Not so IMHO. It was equal or (more honestly) less than the Elite detail in terms of illustration and graphical quality.

The Elite backgrounds are slicker, the transitions are way better and more importantly....Frontier have concentrated on building a core engine that displays the primary purpose of their game, space flight simulation.

I simply do not know what Star Citizen is trying to show it's backers during this development phase. I'd prefer they concentrate on getting one thing working well, not even perfect just reliably but what I experienced was a few things just not working at all.

I refer back to my question of when did these games start being worked on? £35m buys a lot of developers vs £1.5m and given the lead guys in Frontier are going around doing their own marketing as well as their day jobs am I seeing a lot more conviction from Frontier? The CloudI marketing department are legend though.

PS: I still think they should work harder on their game than their promo videos on SS.

There is something fundamentally wrong with your install I think. Even though SC is pre alpha space flight is beautifully fluid,  there's zero lag and I get no artifacts or graphic glitches. I find the realistic flight model a real joy to use. Coupling and uncoupling in flight is really inspired. General opinion is that SC graphics and flight characteristics are very polished. It does require a fairly decent PC though. Maybe try a reinstall.

I do find that occasionally it fails to load and I have to restart, but I guess that's pre alpha for you.

For reference the game should look like this

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

That's a nice video, they all are that's what's confusing me because I get 2560 x 1440 resolution for most of my other games but even dropping down to 1900 x 1200 I wasn't too happy with the way it looked and performed.

I did notice that the 19GB patch took a while to download and seemed to be reverifying the download rather than downloading it during the install, perhaps the download wasn't good. I'll try again.

Not sure about time-scales but ED is in Beta whereas SC is pre-Alpha with little or no focus being put on optimisation.

That said, it's my opinion that SC looks better than ED and I agree with Smilo that it's really smooth and lag-free. There are graphical glitches in the hangars and they are acknowledged by the developers. As such, I expect them to be addressed when the game is optimised.

There's a huge amount of development happening in the Squadron 42 area that isn't being given as high a profile as, for example, the ships.

We'll compare notes at the LAN :)

How good is your rig? I have an i5 @ 4.1G 16G RAM and a 770. At 1080p, the performance is "adequate" and it looks stunning.
When the game is released proper I expect to drop $$$ on another GPU or SLI the 770.
I'll probably get another GPU as the VRAM is a killler right now, especially in the hanger. And it will only get worse @ higher res.

It's a Samsung Series 7 Gamer NP700G7C-S0UK1 laptop with a 17" 120Hz screen, 16GB of 1600RAM i7-3610QM and a 256GB OCZ Vertex4, Hitachi 7200rpm 750GB. The only weak link that could impact performance is the mechanical drive, which is sitting at over 550GB full and that's where my games are but I have larger games on there than SC, Titanfall for example, what runs perfectly. I will be replacing the second HDD.

I tried Arena Commander again last night this time with the Joystick and TrackIR, it wasn't bad looking on second examination, with a bit less spinning around and motion blur.

I found a profile for my Saitek X.45 and appleid that fine, the joystick works great with the game but I badly need to find the XML to alter joystick sensitivity. It's not dead zone issue, I can lightly use the joystick and move normally but my Rhino Claw hands aren't that delicate. So if anyone has a sensitivity config please let me know, even if it's just for the rudder as on touch on the joystick rudder literally throws the nose 3 inches, certainly not fine enough tuning for lining up with a target. The other axis I can get used to being sensitive.

Quote from: OldBloke;386827Why not join your fellow members on Elite:Dangerous?

I've been playing for a while now and really enjoying it. We play as a bunch of friends in an instance where all other players are NPCs so makes for a nice relaxing 'tutorial' experience.

So if, like me, dog fighting is not necessarily where your space gaming lies then give E:D a go and see if you can keep Aulin supplied with enough fish :flirty:

I've just been getting into it - not grabbing me just yet though.  Sticking with it though, I see potential :)

I got bored quite quickly but looking forward to the Beta 2 release.

What I do really like is the key bindings/controls. Hope SC can emulate this.

Yeah, agreed.  I'm hoping the new exploration mechanics are worth checking out.  At any rate, it's a good thing for CIG to keep an eye on - there are a few lessons there, good and bad.
