If I was a sensible person and I could have one ship, it would be my Avenger :)

All I have right now is my non-lti avenger, but I'm thinking that some sort of lti ship would be a good idea for when I blow all my credits on some failed venture in-game. I've not dabbled in this melting lark, but I'd probably need to in order to get a concept ship given the prices. If I melt my avenger to get a herald, say, what happens to all the other parts of the package? The hangar, alpha access, etc...?

Ask yourself what role appeals to you the most then pick the ship you want to facilitate that.

No sadly you have to melt the entire package, losing your Alpha access, credits, etc, etc..... it's quiet a point of contention on the official forums, people want CIG to apply the Alpha Access to your account not a package, but as it stands if you melted your Avenger & bought an LTI "concept ship" say the upcoming Drake Herald, you would have no Alpha access, no game download even, it's a crazy situation that you could be a backer in the $100+ range but not even have a copy of the game !

The only plus thing is LTI is going to be a tiny tiny part of the game, think of it like Armour repairs in WoW, you WILL be able to afford it just playing the game, sure it's nice to have, but it's certainly not worth paying grey-market extra on Reddit for it...

BrotherTobious

Ahhhh thanks Andy clears that up nicely

I read something about regular insurance not covering "risk level 5" sectors, ...any idea if lti will also not cover these areas, or if I got the wrong end of the stick and insurance is not limited like that at all?

There will be areas where regular insurance will not be valid.  My recollection is that they mentioned you would be able to purchase to up cover I think?

I remember something of the sort as well.

No, that turned out to be the lore writers going a bit too far.

Hull insurance will be valid everywhere, but there will be places where cargo and upgrades insurance will not.  So, you'll never completely lose a ship as long as it's insured, but you might lose the cargo and all of the after-market upgrades that you've applied to the ship.

Gorion

You should be able to insure the aftermarket upgrades as well, unless that changed as well.
